NEWS The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 7A . GREEK WEEK Continued from page 1A Fraternities and sororities are divided into teams. They compete to raise the larg- est amount of money over the course of the week. Fraterities and sororities of the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association as well as Kappa Alpha Psi Inc., a member of the National Pan-Hel- lenic Council, participated in this year's competition. Team Three - Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Chi - received top hon- ors at last night's culminating event, the Greek Sing and Variety performance. Greek Week teams also collected 262 pints of blood for the American Red Cross and raised more than $1,600 through a community-wide recycling program. Because the project encompasses a variety of events and thousands of stu- dents, Mike Vostrizansky, co-director of the Greek Week Steering Committee, said Greek Week is more visible to the campus community than the efforts of individual houses. "A lot of the other philanthropy we do gets brushed under the rug," he said. "Greek Week is our chance to shine and show people what we do and that we're here." Vostrizansky also said this year's slo- gan, "Not because we can - because we care," reflects the Greek community's strong dedication to service projects. "It's a little corny, but it's true," he said. GRATZ Continued from page 1A members erupted in laughter. After the meeting, Gratz told reporters that BAMN activists often trailed signature gather- ers, telling people not to sign the petitions. "In many, many instances, BAMN was right behind our circu- lators," she said. "To now come and say that people were misrepresent- ing the issue is completely untrue." Gratz, who is white, was denied admission to the University in 1995. She held that the University had violated her 14th Amendment rights to equal protection by giv- ing preference to blacks, Latinos and Native Americans in admis- sions decisions. She was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the University's undergraduate admission pro- grams, Gratz v. Bollinger. The Supreme Court ruled on the case in 2003, deciding that the Universi- ty's point-based affirmative action program was unconstitutional. But the court did not entirely reject the use of race in college admissions. It struck down the University's point-based system only because it was "not narrowly tailored," according to Chief Jus- tice William Rehnquist's ruling.. Addtionally, in the case Grutter v. Bollinger, the Supreme Court upheld that it was constitutional for the Law School to use race in its admissions policy. Gratz launched MCRI in 2003 with the support of Ward Con- nerly, a former University of California regent who was a key proponent of a similar measure approved by California voters in 1995. APPLE Continued from page 1A professors who "teach every lecture as if it were their last." Rabkin's students said they could relate to his lecture because one of the goals of his class is to explore how words can be used to express differ- ent thoughts in different contexts. Students also said one of Rabkin's strengths is his ability to bring litera- ture to life and to challenge students to apply what they learn to their lives. When asked about how he encourages student participation and interaction in his lectures, Rab- kin referred to his motto "real work is better than homework." Committee co-chair Sean Wachtel outlined some of the qualities that dis- tinguish Rabkin from most teachers. "Prof. Rabkin embodies some- thing we were really looking for," Wachtel said. "His challenging lectures leave students completely exhausted and looking forward to their next class in anticipation." Rabkin, visibly moved and hum- bled by the recognition, expressed his appreciation of the honor. "A week after I found out, I real- ized that I was still smiling at the oddest moments, feeling so gratified and humbled at being recognized by the people for whom my work is most important," Rabkin said. Even after a teaching career spanning 37 years and more than 150 publications, Rabkin confessed to his continuous efforts toward personal growth and improvement. He closed his speech by sharing his seven adages for life, abbreviated in the novel acronym "cuvwebs": choose goals, use time, value peo- ple, work zestfully, enjoy life, be direct and sleep sufficiently. "That's my golden apple, and I offer it to you in the hope that it will help you as much as it has helped me," he said. GOT A NEWS TIP?
