NEWS The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 7A SOLE Continued from page 1A man herself who should be pressured. In a letter dated March 23, Gary Krenz, special counsel to the president, responded to SOLE's repeated requests, emphasizing that the issue requires Coleman's attention because of long-term implications for the University's future business relationships. "It requires careful consideration as to whether and how it is a better, or more feasible, approach to achieving the goals that we all share - namely, enforcement of the Vendor Code of Conduct and fostering of just behavior on the part of those who make prod- ucts bearing the name and marks of our institution," he wrote. SOLE resorted to protests and "more disruptive" methods to push the issue only after Coleman repeatedly refused to meet with the michigan daily :x students, said LSA freshman Blase Kearney, who organized yes- terday's demonstration. SOLE members also fasted for the day as part of the protest to represent workers earning "starvation wages" - a feat particularly difficult given the free food on the Diag yesterday, Kearney said. Turnout was unexpectedly high, SOLE member Adri Miller said. Sporting red armbands and chanting slogans, about 50 stu- dents and community members marched. Miller, an RC sophomore, said she was impressed with the diverse crowd the protest attracted. "These are not the people who would normally turn out," she said, which she cited as proof that workers' rights are important to a wide swath of the campus community. About 15 universities, including Georgetown and the Universi- ty of Wisconsin at Madison, have already adopted the Designated Suppliers Program. ALUMS Continued from page 1A recruiting and catering to young members may be the cause. Forman said during his presi- dency membership "definitely was weighted toward elder alumni." That is changing. Although the decline was evenly spread among different segments of the membership, the association plans to place an emphasis on career services for 25- to 38-year-old alumni. By improving services to help connect alumni within profes- sional fields, the association hopes to attract younger alums who are new to the business world. They also plan to sponsor networking activities for recent graduates. Helen Peters, who worked as an assistant under Forman and Graf- ton, said the new focus on youth is making older alumni unhappy. Membership has been on the rise for the last 10 years. It was at 86,000 in 1996, 99,000 in 2001 and 108,000 last year. The University boasts the fourth-largest association in the country. About a quarter of grad- uates - 108,000 out of the esti- mated 425,000 living Michigan alumni - are registered mem- bers. The national average is less than 19 percent. The association said the recent drop in membership is not a shock because it is consistent with membership drops at other schools. "We're concerned, not pan- icked," Alumni Association spokeswoman Cat Niekro said.
