UGANDA
Continued from page 1A
and singled out those with an innate sense of
rhythm, solid social skills, strong academics and
a positive attitude.
Hefley, the foundation's executive director,
said spots in the group are highly coveted. Com-
ing from a place where three meals a day is con-
sidered a luxury, novelties like Marriot hotels
and trips to Disneyland are, to the children, the
stuff of dreams.
But Hefley said the real draw for the kids is
their desire to "make a difference not only in
the michigan daily

their lives, but raise funds to support over 750
children through food, education, medicine and
shelter."
The empowerment the children feel from shar-
ing songs and dances from their homeland with
foreign audiences is clear at every movement,
every beat of a drum and stomp of a foot. The
children are ambassadors of hope, with personal
stories of courage and triumph that add an element
of urgency and vitality to their performance.
"I wouldn't do what I do if I didn't think 'Chil-
dren of Uganda' could change the world," Hefley
said.
There will be an additional performance tomor-
row at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $18 to $40.

HEALTH
Continued from page 1A
said June Rusten, a former Ann Arbor
public school teacher. "It should be for
all, like Social Security is for all."
Supporters of universal health care
think medical treatment should be avail-
able to all citizens, regardless of their
ability to pay.
Some said the federal government
should provide this care, while others
argue it should be run by the states.
At present, the government only pro-

vides free health care to certain groups,
such as the elderly, veterans and chil-
dren.
Many Americans currently receive
health insurance through their employers.'
Those without coverage usually pay their
medical bills out-of-pocket.
Only one attendee vocally opposed
universal health care.
"Government has proven that they
can't handle the simplest things," said
Seymour Kroll, an Ann Arbor resident.
"Now we're talking about universal medi-
cal coverage."
Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn), a

staunch supporter of universal health
care, declared his support for a system in
which the federal government is respon-
sible for all medical costs.
"I am an unabashed and unashamed
supporter of the single-payer system," he
said. "It's the only thing that's going to
work."
Coleman agreed.
"I absolutely believe we need to have
universal coverage," she said.
As for her arm - chalk it up to the
risks of staying healthy.
"I was trying to be good," she said.
"But my treadmill went haywire."
