The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 16, 2006 - 9A

* QUAD
Continued from page 1A
around the world.
The residence hall will boast an
updated dining facility similar to the
Hill Dining Center slated to open adja-
cent to Mosher-Jordan in 2008. With
several stations cooking and serving
foods including stir-fry, pizza and grill-
style sandwiches, students' hunger for
made-to-order meals will be satisfied,
Henry said.
North Quad will also feature a eatery
and study area called the Image Cafe.
The caf6 will have an outside entrance
on State Street and will also be acces-
sible from inside the building.
"We're talking about more of a din-
ing experience," Henry said. "Food has
a lot to do with community-building and
morale."
There are benefits to building an
entirely new hall instead of simply
renovating an old one, Baier said. Cur-

rent residence halls face problems with
retrofitting, he said. Facilities like laun-
dry rooms and computer labs have been
added to many residence halls after they
were already built, leaving them poorly
located or less effective.
"With North Quad, these problems
will be solved right off the bat," Baier
said.
Although the building's planners
have high hopes for the building, they
worry its expected popularity could
cause problems. University Planner
Susan Gott said she expects students
to scramble for spots in the renovat-
ed Mosher-Jordan and North Quad
because of their updated dining halls
and air conditioning. Since the two
halls will only hold a combined 950
students, designating rooms may be
difficult, she said.
Administrators have planned two
public sessions to talk about the plans.
The first is March 21 at 6:30 p.m.
in Palmer Commons. The second is
March 23 at 6 p.m. in Lorch Hall.

FILM.
Continued from page 1A
"Working with all these people, they were
able to bring something to it. We created a
nice kind of networking."
Even so, "Spiral" was not shot cheaply.
"We wanted to shoot it on 35-millimeter
(film), which everyone says (costs) too much,
but we wanted a good student film," he said.
After a 27-day shoot, principal work on
the film was finished.
"We actually came in under budget and
under schedule," Sharrief said.
His experience won't end with tonight's
premiere. Hoping to make filmmaking a
more popular activity for students, Sharrief
has plans for more student-based movie ven-
tures.
He's working a project with the Universi-
ty's film department.
"I'm in the middle of writing and funding
a film about my experiences - it will show
Detroit while losing stereotypical imagery of
Detroit," he said.

DINGWALL
Continued from page 1A
question.
Frank Gehry's Stata Center is the other current MIT
icon. Integrating many different academic programs, the
Stata Center provides shapes and spaces not easily forgot-
ten. While these projects are much more elaborate than
North Quad, the spirit of questing for iconic architecture
should be applied to our campus.
Having a signature architectural statement is especially
pertinent to North Quad. One of its three key design goals
is to create "an entire building that is itself a gateway."

Althoughathetnorthernmost Central Campus building,
this idea of a gateway appears to be more of a figurative
notion than a physical declaration. A more iconic exterior
could better articulate this notion physically.
Like the Graduate House at the University of Toronto,
building elements could actually extend over the street as a
threshold. The dormitory has intricate layers of perforated
metal that cantilever over the streetscape. It uses the over-
lapping materials as elegant signage.
As the North Quad design develops, the core design can.
still rise from sensible to signature. North Quad should
strive for greatness in its structure along with its noble
goal of creating an innovative academic atmosphere. Only
then will the quadrangle prophecy truly be complete.

SSAA
Continued from page 1A
est in the issue. Ward Connerly, a former regent of the Univer-
sity of California at Berkeley, passed a similar ballot initiative
in California. He then moved on to Michigan, where he spear-
headed MCRI. Connerly has said that if the ballot measure
can pass in Michigan, it can pass anywhere in the country.
"What happens here is really going to be the gateway,"
Tanner said.

SSAA originally formed in response to the 2003 Supreme
Court cases on the University's use of race as a factor in admis-
sions, but it began to disband after the Court ruled in favor of
the University's using race as a factor to achieve diversity, said
Jaime Nelson, a co-chair of the group's outreach committee.
SSAA's beginnings as a reactionary coalition is part of the
reason the group's organizational structure has developed
slowly, Nelson said.
The group reorganized at the end of last year to campaign
against MCRI.

ARIES
(March 21 to April 19)
Don't listen to any feelings you have
of self-doubt or inner anxiety today. This
is just a passing thing. Sometimes things
trigger emotions that we have long
buried.
TAURUS
(April 20 to May 20)
Avoid arguments with friends and
groups today. It won't be a pretty pic-
ture. People are very hotheaded and
emotional today.
GEMINI
(May 21 to June 20)
Power struggles with authority figures
are almost inevitable today. Your best bet
is simply to avoid parents, bosses and
authority figures. If you do encounter
them, they will be powerful!
CANCER
(June 21 to July 22)
Avoid political and religious argu-
ments - especially with people at work.
Someone is hot under the collar today!
(Hopefully, it's not you.) Don't try to
convince anybody of anything.
LEO
(July 23 to Aug. 22)
Somebody you share something with
might lose something or break some-
thing today. Or you might lose some-
thing. (This is definitely a day where
loss can be experienced.)
VIRGO
(Aia 23 to Sent .22)

reality check.
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
Parents must be patient with children
today. Don't let anything turn into Bad
Day at Black Rock. Children learn most.
by imitating you, not by listening to
what you say.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
Power struggles with family members
are likely today. Frustrations arise
because machinery - small appliances,
etc. - breaks down today. Consider this
a test of your maturity.
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
The harder you try to persuade others
to agree with you, the more they will
resist you. That's because Pluto is in the
picture today. Pluto always rises to meet
the opposition.
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
Avoid arguments about money and
possessions. Today is all about letting go
of stuff that is no longer useful. Maybe
you need io let go of some of your pos-
sessions.
PISCES
(Feb. 19 to March 20)
It's difficult to deal with people in
authority today. They may demand that
you account for yourself in some way.
(Nobody likes to hear this.)
