The $.50 fee was packaged with a $.50 increase in funding and submitted as a total $1 ase in student fees. It passed by a single vote - four to three. The three votes against it came from Repub- licans, who expressed concerns that the extra financial burden on students would send a negative message in a time of budget cuts. "It seems to me to be the wrong time to be increasing expenditures and add- ing to the financial burden on students," Regent Andrew Richner-(R-Grosse Point Park) said. Levine said the extra $.50 - less than the cost of a can of soda and about a thousands less than a private lawyer - will provide a great service to students at a good value. "SLS is something you may not look for before you need it, but once you do, it's really an important service," Levine said. The fee increase will be SLS's first since 1998. DAILY Continued from page 1A "It can be tough to catch instances of plagiarism before it goes to print, but I think that our response afterwards has been appropriate." In recent weeks, The Michigan Daily has been embroiled in a controversy with the University's chapter of the NAACP and other groups on cam- pus over an editorial cartoon that ran on Nov. 28. Students voicing concerns about the cartoon feel that the Daily should not have published the cartoon because it is racist. Fresard said he hopes that The Michigan Daily can continue to become more sensitive to multicultural issues. The recommendations of a multicultural com- mission, created by Pesick, will go into effect next year under Fresard. Recommendations include attending meetings of minority groups to increase the number of minorities writing for the Daily and holding workshops to teach reporters to be more sensitive in their coverage. "I think, over the next year as we implement the suggestions of the Daily's multicultural commission and we look for new ways to get feedback from our readers and to be accountable to our readers, we will see some improvement in those areas," Fresard said. "Hopefully the Daily will begin to reflect, in its staff and coverage, the diversity of the campus and the community that we cover." Fresard appointed Assistant Managing Editor Ash- ley Dinges as his managing editor. Because Dinges has a specialty in design, Fresard hopes that she can assist with a total redesign of The Michigan Daily in the com- ing semester. Daily staff members also elected the new editorial page editors, Emily Beam and Chris Zbrozek, on Nov. 11. Fresard said: "I have a lot of confidence that they will be taking the page in a more local direction." "They're going to focus on looking at how local issues affect students, and they're also going to be expanding the opinion section to include op-ed pages more often." The staff chose RC sophomore Karl Stampfl as the managing news editor. Fresard worked as an editor while Stampfl was a reporter and said he is confident that Stampfl's credentials as a reporter will carry over to his new position. The Daily sports staff also recently elected LSA sophomore Jack Herman to become the new managing sports editor. be acquitted on all charges. was ecstatically happy," said Abdel- 1, who describes him as an active r for community development pro- s and human rights. Students Allied for Freedom and Equality held the conference amid strong protests from the Israeli com- munity. The controversy peaked when two pro-Israeli students filed suit against the University days before the confer- ence to stop the event or ban its speak- ers from campus. A judge denied the lawsuit a hearing in the Washtenaw County Circuit Court the day before the conference began.
