"(The congregation) came out to preach truth in what is an orgy of lies," said Sam Phelps-Roper, Pas- tor Phelps' grandson. "God made the judgment, we're just telling you what it is," he said, referring to the congregation's protest. Even while the protesters attacked gays, OFU organizer and Rackham student Gabe Javier said the event raised awareness about hate and homophobia. Javier, also commented on the positive effects of having a protest, as opposed to completely ignoring the Phelps' congregation. "I'm glad we did a demonstration. I'm glad we could have a community voice. There's very few times that LGBT people and their allies are truly visible." CITY Continued from page 1A Rapundalo would probably serve on the committee at some point in the future, for now, the committee needed more experienced Council members. Greden has been a Council member since 2003, and Woods has served since 2001, while Rapundalo was elected for his first term this November. "The good thing about having both of them is that they have both been on Council and are better seasoned about issues," Rapundalo said. Both Hieftje and Rapundalo said that the committee assign- ments are not permanent. "These committee assignments are not in perpetuity - they can be changed," Rapundalo said. "We're pretty casual on that stuff," Hieftje said. Regardless of the difference in Council experience, members of MSA said they were disappointed with this decision. "Rapundalo has been a great advocate for students," MSA Pres- ident Jesse Levine said. In addition to proposing the idea for the committee, during his campaign Rapundalo worked extensively with the College Democrats in order to reach out to student voters. "It would have been great to work with him. I would hope that the Council members that are appointed to the committee are as responsive as Rapundalo would have been," Levine added. Levine and newly elected MSA Rep. Laura Van Hyfte, who is also MSA's City Council liaison, and Arielle Linsky selected the five students to serve on the committee. Van Hyfte and Levine will both serve on the committee with former MSA Rep. Mike Forster and former Students' Rights Commission chair Daniel Taylor-Cohart. LSA sophomore and Michigan Daily columnist Mara Gay has also been appointed to the committee. EFFICIENCIES, ONE, TWO and three bed- room apartments located on the UM Campus.
