NEWS The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 18, 2005 - 7 PROTEST Continued from page 1 claim. Speaker Kris Claphan of the Wolverine -Coalition for Human Rights, who identified herself as an ally for the transgender commu- nity, also emphasized the need for support outside of the transgender community at the rally. "A year ago it seemed natural to say, 'I'm not one of them. We have different issues,"' she said. "Becoming an ally and understand- ing my expression has become a process." While acknowledging Ann Arbor's repu- tation as a diverse city, the rally organiz- ers urged onlookers to remember that hate crimes can happen anywhere. Brosan briefly touched on the importance of eliminating not only open hate speech, but offensive references in casual conversation as well. "We must not tolerate invidious discrimi- nation at any level," she said. Public Policy graduate student Sebas- tian Colon-Otero, who read a poem titled "Remembering" that he wrote hours before about his experience as a transgender per- son, professed his pride in the University but added, "I am not sure the University is proud of me being here." The Transgender Day of Remembrance began in 1999 and is sponsored locally by the Transgender Advocacy Project of the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project, Transforum and the University's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgen- der Affairs. The groups will also hold a "Remembering Our Dead" memorial Sunday in the Rackham Assembly Hall at 5:30 p.m. CAMPUS Continued from page 1 get rides from people," Merson said. He added that he often misses meet- ings on campus because the busses he usually takes don't run later than 10 p.m. "I like not having to have (a car) as long as you can get around easily, but you can't," he said. Chris Baldwin, also a graduate student at the School of Education, said he would like to use the buses to commute from his house, which is close to a bus stop, but he can't afford to spend the extra time waiting for the bus to arrive. "I'm a commuter, but I'm not using (the buses) because I can't afford to tack on another 30 to 45 minutes for an already long commute." Baldwin said. "But if there was predictability, I'd totally ride the bus." Miller said upcoming improve- ments to the bus system include the addition of three new buses and the possible extension of routes and hours. The idea of an electronic countdown at bus stops that would let passengers know how far away the bus is was also floated at the meeting, but no concrete plans were made. Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for the University, said some people per- ceive greater barriers to transporta- tion than are really there. "A lot of people don't know it takes them an hour to go the entire commuter route," Brown said. Baier said previous improvements in transportation have already made a big impact on congestion and envi- ronmental sustainability. "(We) created all these new riders, which takes about 2,000 cars off the road, that's what's huge," Baier said. But Merson, who is considering buying a car for the winter season, said that unless the buses become much more reliable, students will still need cars. "I value the environment and sus- tainability ... but as we learned with recycling, create a system that's easy for people to use; otherwise they won't do it," Merson said. Brown said she hopes bus stop locations will play an important role for students in locating hous- ing. But some expressed concern that without cars, students would be packed into concentrated areas around bus stops and would not have much mobility. Merson said property close to bus stops is more expensive and is densely populat- ed by students. "You develop almost student ghet- tos," Merson said. "You're close to some things, but prices will go up and quality will go down. You could do a whole study on that." ECONOMY Continued from page 1 The dollar, which had been appreciating since the 1980s, stopped that trend in the first quarter of 2002 and has since declined by an average of 4.2 percent each year. It only rebounded' slightly with a 1.2-percent increase but is expected to continue to decline in fiscal years 2006 and 2007. With that information, for- eign investors may not want dollars anymore for the bulk of their reserve currency assets. If other countries decide to diver- sify their reserves, the demand would plunge, and the dollar could start a declineof 6- to 8- percent each year. However, for all consumers and businesses, the bottom line is still good news. "The likelihood of a reces- sion in the next fiscal year is only between 10 and 12 per- cent," Hymans said. the michigan daily CORNERHOUSE APARTMENTS 205 S. Try not to force financial issues. Best to give things a sober, sec- ond thought. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Don't push the river today. Your efforts will be blocked by authority fig- ures. It's in your best interest to wait. Whatever you do today, proceed slowly. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is not a good day to deal with the government or large institutions. Unseen forces seem to thwart your efforts. It's best to bide your time, if you can. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) For whatever reason, fear seems to prevent you from doing something today. You might fear failure. You might fear a confrontation with someone. If you feel this way, do nothing. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) All your dealings with authority fig- ures will be dicey today. Your efforts to assert yourself are somehow blocked. This is not a good day to push your plans forward. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Dealings with partners are difficult today. Therefore, don't ask for the Moon. Remember that others are labor- ing under the same obstacles. In other words, you're not alone. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) It's not easy to encourage co-workers to agree with you today. Therefore, don't even try. People are irritated with restric- tions that are placed on them today. Go gently. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) For some reason you feel that your own worst suspicions about yourself are confirmed today. This shakes your self- confidence. But this is just an illusion! Don't take it seriously. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Small appliances or machinery might break down today. Domestic arguments are also likely. You definitely need to be extra-patient with everything and every- one at home. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) The problem with today is that one part of you wants to be aggressive and bold, and the other part of you wants to hold back and be conservative. You can't suck and blow at the same time. YOU BORN TODAY You radiate confidence and ambition. You have a NEED HOUSING FOR FALL 2006? Fantastic Apartments, Great Houses.
