age poor families to save money. The program would operate by hav-
ing the government match the amount of money poor families put into
savings.
The crowd, mostly students but including a fair number of others,
expressed enthusiasm about Edwards's message. He had to stop many
times during his remarks because of applause and cheers from the
crowd.
Jeff Hicks, an LSA junior, commended Edwards for his bravery in
sulbject matter. "You don't (normally) talk to white America about pov-
erty," Hicks said.
In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Edwards said students should
stand up for themselves in Ann Arbor politics.
"I think any time students join together in numbers and speak out
loudly and ferociously, they can have a huge impact," Edwards said.
"And having students' votes count and make a real difference in the
community that they live in would seem to me to be very important to
the students," he added.
When asked about the fact that Ann Arbor's ward system, among
other factors, keeps students from having representation in the city's
politics or governance, Edwards said, "They clearly should have a say.
)3ut in order for that to happen, they're going to have to get organized
and speak up."

NGO
Continued from page 1A
Next summer, Crossing Borders plans to send eight under-
graduates to Vietnam to continue Duong and Leahy's work in
improving newborn care and the conditions of the country's
orphans. In addition, Crossing Borders hopes to expand its
efforts to Latin America and Africa. Currently there are only
eight members of the NGO.
LSA junior and Crossing Borders development director Dan
Axelson, who recently studied in the Dominican Republic, said
his study abroad experience motivated him to become involved
with the organization.
"In the Dominican Republic, I was exposed to so (many chal-
lenges) similar to those in Vietnam, and I came back wanting to
improve conditions," Axelson said. "And I feel that as students,
we have the time, energy and drive to get involved and really
make an impact."
Charley Sullivan, CSEAS program coordinator, said the idea
to create an NGO was an audacious one.
Sullivan, who has served as a major source of support and
knowledge for Duong and Leahy added, "I think there is often
a struggle with how to be effective in scientific research and
make a difference. (Crossing Borders') approach allows them
to do both."

PARKS

movement in America.
For many in attendance, Parks was an inspiration not only
for the black community, but for women as well.
"She built confidence and courage in people to know that
they weren't alone and they can make a difference," said LSA
freshman and SISTER vice-president Simrat Singh.
Other students, including Singh and LSA junior Neena
Sharma, said that Parks's actions also showed women, and
black women in particular, that they shouldn't be intir idated
to fight for what they believe in.

"I think she provided a lesson for everyone to learn that
your values are important and that you should stand by them
even if people around you don't agree," Sharma said.
"I hope people recognize the impact she has made as a
woman, for women and for African Americans," said Hanna
Tessema, Stockwell's minority peer advisor. "She has made
life a lot easier for people."
The vigil, primarily intended for the residents in Stock-
well, is the first of two events honoring Parks's legacy. On
Dec.l, Stockwell will present a program - open to the
entire campus community - commemorating the 50th
anniversary of Parks's refusal to give up her bus seat to a
white man.
