NEWS The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, October 26, 2005 - 7 * CHOMSKY Continued from page 1. Chomsky has been active in left-wing politics since his mid 30s. Chomsky has become one of the best-known American leftists due to his controversial views, which have sparked intense debate on college campuses and at prominent think tanks for many years. In 1969, he published his first book on politics, and by the early 1980s, he had become both the most distinguished fig- ures in American linguistics and one of the most influential left-wing critics of American foreign policy. Chomsky remains one of the most prolific commentators on international affairs, with more than 30 books on the subject to his credit. Chomsky has reserved his most scathing criticism for President Bush's war on terror. "9-11," a controversial book Chomsky wrote after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, was a New York Times bestseller. In the book, Chomsky wrote in ref- erence to the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan: "Wanton killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against terrorism." He has also argued that the major sources of international terrorism are the world's great powers. In one of his best-known works, "What Uncle Sam Really Wants," Chomsky wrote that what the U.S. govern- ment really wants when it talks about stability is security for the upper classes and big business. Another focus of Chomsky's political work has been the analysis of main- stream mass media. Chomsky argues that the major U.S. media outlets alter their coverage to promote the interests of large corporations and the government. Due to both his political and scholarly writings, Chom- sky keeps a busy lecture schedule. He is often booked up to two years in advance. Chomsky spoke to a densely packed crowd of University students last year in the Uni- versity's Law School. Chomsky's prominence as a scholar and political commentator has won him a global audience. Chom- sky is widely read outside the U.S.; "9-1l" has been published in 26 countries and translated into 23 lan- guages. The book was a bestseller in at least five coun- tries, including Canada and Japan. Chomsky's views are often given extensive coverage on networks around the world, while he receives few mentions in the U.S. media. When Chomsky was voted the leading living public intellectual this year in a readers' poll conducted by the British magazine "Prospect," he said only, "I don't pay a lot of attention to polls." WHITE HOUSE Continued from page 1 the agent is classified as working undercover. The Times quoted lawyers involved in the case as saying they had no indication Fitzgerald was consider- ing charging Cheney with a crime. The paper said any efforts by Libby to steer investigators away from his conversation with Cheney might be viewed by a prosecutor as attempt to impede the inquiry, which could be a crime. According to a former intelligence official close to Tenet, the former CIA chief has not been in touch with Fitzger- ald's staff for more than 15 months and was not asked to testify before the grand jury even though he was interviewed by Fitzgerald and his staff. The official told the Times that Tenet declined to comment on the investigation. Libby's lawyer, Joseph Tate, did not return phone calls and e-mail to his office. Fitzgerald is expected to decide this week whether to seek criminal indict- ments in the case. Lawyers involved in the case have said Libby and Karl Rove, President Bush's senior adviser, both face the possibility of indictment. McClellan said both Rove and Libby were at work on yesterday. Fitzgerald questioned Cheney under oath more than a year ago, but it is not known what the vice president told the prosecutor. Cheney has said little in public about what he knew. In September 2003, he told NBC he did not know Wilson or who sent him on a trip to Niger in 2002 to check into intelli- gence that Iraq may have been seek- ing to buy uranium there. "I don't know who sent Joe Wilson. He never submitted a report that I ever saw when he came back," Cheney said at the time. " ... I don't know Mr. Wil- son. I probably shouldn't judge him. I have no idea who hired him." Asked yesterday whether Cheney always tells the truth to the public, McClellan said, "Yes." "Frankly I think it's a ridiculous question," he said. "The vice president, like the president, is a straightforward plainspoken person." The Cheney-Libby conversation occurred the same day that The Wash- ington Post published a front-page story about the CIA sending a retired diplo- mat to Africa, where he was unable to corroborate intelligence that Iraq was trying to acquire uranium yellowcake from Niger. The diplomat was Wilson. A year after Wilson's trip, Presi- dent Bush cited British intelligence in his State of the Union address as suggesting that Iraq was pursuing uranium in Africa. the michigan daily AVAILABLE FALL '06.
