By Daniel Levy Daily Sports Writer Last summer, Michigan coach Red Berenson named seniors-to-be Al Mon- toya, Jeff Tambellini and Andrew Ebbett the captains of the Michigan hockey team for the 2005-06 season. On July 27, as expected, Montoya announced he was leaving the Wolver- ines to sign with the New York Rangers. The more shocking news came on Aug. 15, when Tambellini decided to forgo his senior season to play for the Los Angeles Kings. "Montoya almost left the year before, so I had a feeling there was a good chance he was leaving," Ebbett said. "But (Tam- bellini) was kind of a surprise." The early departures have left the Ver- non, British Columbia native as the Wol- verines' lone remaining captain. Despite the losses, Ebbett does not feel he is carry- ing a larger burden on his shoulders. "There's still the same amount of pres- sure," Ebbett said. "I've just got to do my job on the ice and everything else will work out." TOMMASO GOMEZ/Daily Once a trkaptain, now Michigan's sole captain, senior center Andrew Ebbett is charged with leading a squad that includes 11freshmen. .......... I ............ . Setting example in practice and the locker room equally important. It is in this latter ar that Ebbett's value as a captain may shi the brightest, and he hopes his hard wo rubs off onto his teammates. "Oh yeah. Right off the bat that wou be the first thing I want guys to take frt me," Ebbett said. "Just coming to practi every day, being prepared for the wee ends and just that mental focus and strong work ethic." That strong work ethic was just one the characteristics that led Berenson choose him to captain this year's team. "Ebbett is one of our most experieno and prominent players," Berenson sa "He works hard, and I can trust him any situation on or off the ice. So he'll a good captain." With the great teams Michigan hock has produced, Ebbett has had quality ca tains to learn from in his first three ye as a Wolverine. He came in as a freshm to a team led by forward Jed Ortmey a two-time captain. Sophomore seas defenseman Andy Burnes wore the " for the Wolverines. Last year, it was fo ward Eric Nystrom. Along with being gi ty players, those three were good teache and Ebbett was there taking notes eve step of the way. Though he may not h been thinking about being a captain fr< the beginning, he knew he was going be one of the senior leaders of this te before his time expired. "I expected to be in my fourth y here," Ebbett said. "But I don't know I ever thought about being a captain not." Whether or not he thought about that day has arrived and Ebbett is rea to draw on lessons learned from previc Michigan captains to guide this yea team. "Keeping a positive attitude in 1 locker room is important," Ebbett sa "I learned a lot from guys like Ortmey Burnes and Nystrom. College hockey kind of a game of momentum, and talked about that this week. We just w to get off to a good start this weekend." Perhaps one of Ebbett's best qu ties that will serve him well as capt emerged as a result of one of his wc weeks as a Wolverine. In early Janu of last season, Ebbett played an unch acteristically poor series against West Michigan, making costly mistakes a looking to score instead of playing te hockey. At the next Tuesday's practi he was greeted with an unfriendly cc - black. The blck jersey was placed his locker, letting Ebbett know he wo not be playing the following weekend. I remember walking in and seei that in my locker for the first tim Ebbett said. "I immediately kne wasn't playing." While no one questioned Ebbe effort, his head did not appear to be in right place. "I was still trying hard - maybe hard - but it just wasn't going for ri Ebbett said. "I was starting to worry m about scoring goals than playing defe and what was best for the team." Angry and frustrated. Ebbett ente practices that week determined to t things around. After sitting out the we end's series against Alaska-Fairbar he returned to gane action the follow ,veek and tallied 11 poin's in the net CCHA Tournament 3/3-3/5 CCHA 1st Rd.1 TBA 3/10 3/11 3/12 3/17 3/18 3/24 3/25 3/26 4/6 4/8 CCHA 2nd Rd.
