6B - The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - September 12, 2005 Blue splits in disappointing weekend road trip to Ohio By Daniel Bromwich Daily Sports Writer The No. 17 Michigan women's soccer team left Ann Arbor for Ohio its first road trip of the season very con- fident. After a weekend in which it defeated Texas in the first-ever night game at U-M Soccer Field and then came back to tie No. 6 Texas A&M, the team was undefeated and riding high. But the Wolverines left Miami Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon with its first loss and a bit of a reality check. Michigan came out of Friday's game against Ohio with a 3-2 win. But even though they allowed just two shots on freshman goalie Madison Gates, the Wolverines could not convert on a single one of their 18 opportunities and dropped the match 1-0 on Sunday. "We really dominated the play today," coach Debbie Rademacher said. "We were on the attack pretty much the whole game, but this was just a game where we couldn't finish our chances." The over-matched Red Hawks converted at 18:53 when Lindy Slinger headed a cross past Gates. Despite Michigan's constant pressure, that goal proved to be the difference in the match. "They came out really fired up," senior forward Therese Heaton said. "It was their first home game, and they came out and got a goal really early. We put pres- sure on them until the very end of the game, but we just couldn't find the net." The Wolverines had 12 shots on goal in the second half but were never able to finish the job. Freshman Danelle Underwood, who scored the game-winner against Texas, had a career-high six shots and Heaton added four. For Heaton, the game marked the end of a three-game point streak. "It's disappointing to lose this game," Rademacher said. "This was a team that we match up really well with, and we dominated play. We just didn't finish.". One of Michigan's best opportunities came with just under two minutes left in the match. Sophomore mid- fielder Jamie Artsis controlled the ball and fired a shot directly in front of the Miami net, but goalkeeper Shan- non Chew stopped it to keep the shutout intact. Gates was starting just the second game of her career. Despite facing little pressure, she allowed an early goal and did not gather a save. "I thought she did well," Rademacher said. "The one that was scored on her was a beautiful goal, and that's one that is going to get scored no matter what you do." The Wolverines did not expect to go undefeated, but they did not expect their first defeat to come at the hands of the Red Hawks either. Sunday was just the second time in school history and the first time in five years Miami knock off a nationally ranked team. One reason for the loss could be that it is a young team on its first road trip. But mostly, the team just needs to capitalize on its scor- ing chances. "It's a good sign - we are getting chances and getting opportunities offensively," Heaton said. "We put pres- sure on them right up until the game ended. We've just got to convert." As the Wolverines approach the Big Ten season, they plan to use this game as a learning experience. The les- son learned: Never underestimate an opponent. "We might have come into the game a little over-con- fident," Heaton said. "We misjudged our opponent a little bit. But we have to use this loss and learn from it. We are a much better team than we showed today." Michigan had an easier time finding the net on Friday, as they beat Ohio, 3-2. Senior forwards Heaton and Katie Kramer led the team, and Kramer scored the winner at 65:03. Heaton added two assists. The team returns to Ann Arbor this weekend for a night game against Western Michigan on Friday before traveling to South Bend for a Sunday game against the Irish. 0 Therese Heaton saw her three-game scoring streak end In yesterday's 1-0 loss to Miami (Ohio). Morris's first career hat trick propels Stickers past pesky foe By Daniel Levy Daily Sports Writer Late in the second half of Saturday's match, Michigan and Old Dominion found themselves tied at three with the role of hero still up for grabs. With 10 minutes left, Michigan junior Kara Lentz took a sweeping shot from just outside the circle. Katie Morris, one of the Wolver- ines' three captains, stuck out her stick and redirected the ball top-shelf past Old Dominion's Mary Cate Gordon.to give Michigan the lead. With the score and time on their side, the Wolverines clamped down defen- sively, holding the Monarchs to just two shots in the final 10 minutes. Junior goalie Beth Riley stopped both, and Michigan won 4-3 at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. "It's a tremendous win for the pro- gram," Michigan coach Nancy Cox said. "What was clearly demonstrated today on the field was our senior leadership." These days Michigan's field hockey team (3-3) might want to consider spell- ing captain with a "K" for Katie. Morris battled through a foot contusion to net the gamewinner, and the goal gave her a hat trick, the first of her career. And oh yeah, she tallied the game winner in a 2-1 home win against Miami (Ohio) on Friday as well. "As a senior, our role is to step up when nothing else is going on," Morris said. "I realize that is part of the job and try to do what I can, but it was also a complete team effort." Despite Morris's great play, Michi- gan never felt comfortable against Old Dominion (2-3). The two teams battled back and forth all day, with neither team able to build more than a one-goal lead. Wolverine freshman Erin Dallas got the scoring started early. Dallas took the ball deep into the Monarchs' circle and fired a shot on net. Gordon made the stop, but Dallas stayed with the loose ball and sent the rebound high over Gordon's shoulder to give Michigan a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. The Wolverines barely had a chance to enjoy it because the Monarchs came storming back. One minute after Dallas scored, Old Dominion's Katelyn Smither took advantage of a scrum in front of the net to bang the ball past Riley to tie the score. Two minutes later, Denise Admi- raal redirected a shot by Riley to give the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage. Morris tallied her first goal of the game when she picked up a loose ball in front of the Monarch's net and beat Gordon to tie the game heading into halftime. Looking for a good start to the sec- ond half, Michigan did not get what it hoped for. Janelle Engle took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity to put Old Dominion back on top just over two min- utes into the second half. A key mistake by Gordon got the Wol- verines right back into the game. She left her circle to collect a loose ball, hoping to prevent Michigan freshman Stephanie Hoyer from taking a good shot on net. Gordon beat Hoyer to the ball but failed to control it. Michigan junior Mary Fox picked it up and dumped it into the circle where Morris was waiting. The junior sent the ball into the empty net for her second goal of the game, tying the score at three with 16 minutes to play. "I was just at the right place ,at the right time," Morris said. "That one was the result of the hard work of the entire team." Old Dominion out-shot Michigan, 17- 10, and had seven more penalty corner opportunities. But Riley was solid in net for the Wolverines, making nine saves and keeping Michigan in the game until Morris got the offense going. Saturday's win over Old Dominion extended the Wolverines' win streak to three games. "We are gaining more and more con- fidence with each game, and, as a young team, we need that," Morris said. "Now we are starting to get rolling, and we can ride the momentum." Senior Katie Morris's goal with 10 minutes left led Michigan past Old Dominion with a 4-3 win on Saturday.
