NEWS The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 8, 2005 - 7A VRUSH Continued from page 1A IFC spokesman Jon Krasnov admitted there is some skepticism about the new program and how it will affect rush, though he said that under the new policy fraternity par- ties are now more controlled and part of a safer atmosphere. Some fraternity members are now worried that the stereotype of fraternities being insular will be bolstered by the new social policy, which prohibits non-Greek students from entering fraternity or sorority parties without being on a registered -guest list. "It may give the impression to freshmen that the Greek system is an organization only open to certain types of people," saidtJacob Strum- wasser, a brother of the Sigma Nu fraternity and a former IFC presi- dent. "I think it will hurt the rush," Tou- louse said. He added that because non-Greek members must register to get on a party list, freshmen are at a disadvantage because they do CONCERT Continued from page 1A ing, "Production-wise, (West's tour) would have been a little too expensive for us." Over the summer, there appeared to be a possibility that comedian Jon Stewart would be coming to cam- pus; however, BTP Vice President Andrew Bilinsky said Stewart did not fit the large-scale profile they were looking for. "The reason we wanted it to be a music production is that it would be on a much bigger scale than a com- edy act ... we wanted to do a big not know people in fraternities to put them on the list, nor do Greek members know freshman to add to the guest list. "How are you going to recruit a freshman if you don't have their name?" Toulouse asked. Krasnov acknowledged that there is some grumbling concerning the new social policy. "Anytime you have an organiza- tion whose membership is exclusive in any way, there .are going to be skeptics. The Greek community is open to anyone who wishes to breach its gates," Krasnov said. "We're not stopping anyone from seeking membership into any of our chapters," he added. The new social policy is overly- restrictive because fraternities and sororitiesrneed a registered guest list and sober monitors, said Staley, of Psi Upsilon. Staley said fraternity members are "all about community" and that this social policy prevents fraterni- ties from socially interacting with the rest of the University commu- nity, which, he said, intensifies the "cult-like" stigma of the Greek sys- tem. Staley added that the new policy doesn't cut down on illegal activity at all, and there is no enforcement of underage drinking. "All of the (fraternities) do their best to keep anything bad from hap- pening," Staley said. "Really, the social policy itself does not really have an effect on that. It's too hard. Underage kids are always going to find ways to get alcohol." The new social policy includes a "bring-your-own-beer" policy, which is intended to help fraternities escape liability of providing alcohol. to minors. "We operate under the assump- tion that if you bring alcohol, you are the age to consume," Krasnov said. Krasnov said the effects of the new policy on fraternity rush turnout will not be known until the official bid day on October 10, but that he expects good numbers judging by the Fraternity Forum crowds. : ::; ::; : : : :i:i : : : ! : :,., i ::i *; : j : :.: : : :: : : . , : :: i: : : :: :, :: : j: j : :.. : :,: : .:, ,, ': :: : ' :: : , - : : : : : :: :, t : : :,.:77777777 FRESHMEN: INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN JOURNALISM? FIND US TODAY AT FESTIFALL, AND THEN COME TO OUR MASS MEETING TONIGHT AT 7 P.M., STUDENT PUBLICATIONS BUILDING, 420 MAYNARD ST, music concert because we haven't done anything in a while," Bilinsky said. Woll added that students' per- ceived musical tastes influenced the groups' decision to bring a hip-hop artist. "We felt that a lot of students enjoy this genre of music," Woll said, "And we want to be able to reach out to as many students as possible." Last year, BTP brought big-name entertainment back to the Univer- sity with a concert by Ben Folds. MSA funded Michael Moore's appearance last September, a big. draw during the presidential elec- tion season as well as a bargain - he offered to speak on campus for little more than the cost of his airfare and lodging. Officials from MSA, UAC and Hillel led efforts to bring more events to campus over the summer, focusing on diverse acts that would raise political awareness as well as entertain. Ludacris's appearance at a meeting of the NAACP, as well as his performance in the racially themed film "Crash," brought him to the forefront as a possible candi- date. "It's a little upsetting," said Rebec- ca Brandt, a student who received the email, about the fact that the concert was not yet confirmed. "It seemed like something fun." SCHOOLS Continued from page 1A their home university, and they are also allowing financial aid to transfer. Volunteers from these institutions are also organizing benefit concerts and can drives to collect funds and goods. LSU also set up hospitals and treatment centers in the campus assembly center, baseball stadium and field house to provide evacuees with food, water, clothes and medical treatment. These centers - put in place days before the storm hit - have filled prescriptions and discharged nearly 500 of the 4,000 patients admitted since evacuations began. "This represents the largest deploy- ment of public health officials and the largest field hospital ever created in U.S. history," Calongne said. "Almost all of campus is volunteering in some way." For those students having diffi- culty finding a transfer school, the Florida Board of Governors and the Florida Department of Education developed a system to ease standard admission requirements and disperse admission information to interested evacuees. The Florida Cares Initiative, in place since last Thursday, is helping gulf-area students from kindergar- ten through college find replacement schools. "Our goal is to be as helpful as pos- sible in this time," said Bill Edmonds, spokesman for the Florida Board of Governors. "Our intent is not to be a pirate and steal other institutions' students, but to offer them a place to study until they can return to their original schools." the michigan daily ROOMS OR HOUSE near Central/Medical campuses.
