Early Saturday Morning, Januarv 29, 2005, between the hours of 4:00 AM
and 8:00 AM First Little, in Markley Hall was vandalized with hate-speech
and symbols. Specifically, swastikas and "KKK" were scrawled on every
door and/or message board in the hall. We were outraged, troubled and
saddened by this act of prejudice and vandalism.
This incident is an inexcusable disregardfor the values, respect, and
human tolerance that we as the Markley Community, and as
members of the University not only expect, but demand of each other and ourselves.
The Residents of First Little initiated a collective response in which many
residents of Markley participated. More than 1,000 students choose to
display a sign featuring this "No Hate" logo as a symbolic
representation of their stand against hatred. This sign serves not only as a
public rejection of acts of intolerance in Markley, but also as an affirmation
of acceptance and appreciation of each other as diverse and valuable human beings.

Let this informative notice be a small gesture of our ongoing commitment to an
accepting and supportive diverse student body in the Residence Halls
and the campus at large. While DPS pursues its still-open investigation of the matter,
Markley students have continued to show their resolve and support of the "NoHate"
campaign, using the now-familiar image on t-shirts and buttons as well. Please feel
'free to display this symbol in solidarity and support of the values for which it stands.
