NEWS The Michigan Daily - Friday, April 15, 2005 - 7 INTERN ET2 Continued from page 1. dents of the identified schools. Sherman said he hopes that these messages and cautionary announcements from the university heads will stifle the growth of Internet file-sharing. He implied that the copyright infringements that are not currently being pursued may be dropped if users cease download- ing files. "Chances are we will not take further action against these particular infringements, but we're reserving the right to do so. In any event, we will certainly take action against future infringements," Sherman said. According to Sherman, the lawsuits are warranted. "We chose targets based on the egregiousness of the infringe- ment. There was one user who was offer- ing 13,600 MP3 files ... similarly, where we had a large number of infringements at a school, the students at that school were more likely to be targeted." The indicted offenders are faced with a possible penalty of at least $750 per file. For frequent downloaders, this charge would cost a substantial amount of money. But Sherman also said most of these violations are settled for a much smaller amount, "on average in the $3,500 to 4,500 range." For now, the only solution the RIAA deems possible - aside from these lawsuits - is a contract between legal downloading sites and universities. "So far, 44 schools have done deals with legitimate online music services so they can offer their students a legal way to get music. Some students have complained that their tuition or student fees shouldn't be used for music. Yet virtually every school provides cable TV service in their dorms," Sherman said. University spokeswoman Julie Peter- son could not be reached for comment. The RIAA is not against online music distribution, Sherman added: "I think digital distribution of music is just beginning, and it's going to get a whole lot larger than it is right now ... but I think users are going to really gravitate toward subscription services as they learn more about them." CLASS Continued from page 1 tative Melton Lee said that while classes about affirma- tive action are important, they should present a more balanced discussion. "I definitely think courses on affirmative action need to be taught here, since Michigan is at the center of the debate, but I don't see the educational value in a course that's openly biased," said Lee, an LSA junior. "I think it's highly unethical for Cohen to use his faculty position and University resources to further his political agenda," he added. BUST Continued from page 1 him. He wasn't cursing. He wasn't even scream- ing." Police said the marijuana that was found had a higher potency than most marijuana because instead of being grown in soil, it was grown in a nutrient solution. Some also came from Can- ada. The powerful drug commanded a steeper price on the street - $3,000 to $4,000 a pound compared to the usual $700 to $1,000, the Ann Arbor News reported. LSA senior Evan Major said he agreed that the class should present both sides of the issue and said he hoped the class did not turn into a pedestal for Cohen's posi- tion. "(Cohen) is a very outspoken individual on one side of that issue, and if he's doing it in the classroom, I'd be not so thrilled with the University for letting that hap- pen," Major said. Rackham student Kate Stenvig, who has run for MSA president under the Defend Affirmative Action Party three times over the past three years, said she could not see the class opening up any debate or pro- viding any educational value. "I think there needs to be more debate on the cam- pus about affirmative action, but this class taught by Carl Cohen does not encourage that debate," Stenvig said. "I can't even imagine what would be talked about in the class aside from abstract statistics that he's going to obsess over that are not in any way related to why affirmative action exists." The course is worth one credit and will last for five weeks. Cohen said he would also invite the attorneys from the cases and University administrators. "If I could get President Coleman on the debat- ing podium, I would love to do it, but I doubt that she would meet me," Cohen said. WANT TO WRITE FOR DAILY NEWS OVER THE SUMMER?
