NEWS

The Michigan Daily - Monday, November 29, 2004 - 7A

ECONOMY
Continued from page 1A
increase by 3.25 percent and saving will
increase 1.25 percent.
Holiday sales at Wal-Mart over the
Thanksgiving weekend - traditionally
the start of the holiday shopping season
- were lower than expected, and sales
for November, while higher than last year,
were still well short of the 2 to 4 percent
increase the company predicted last week,
according to a company news release.
Total sales during the holiday sea-
son, excluding money spent on cars
and in restaurants, are expected to
increase by less than they did last
year, according to the National Retail
Federation.
Seyhun said he does not expect strong
holiday sales at stores like Wal-Mart
and K-Mart - which recently merged
with Sears, Roebuck and Co - since
the people who frequently shop at
these retail giants have been hit hard by
increases in gas and energy prices.
"The annual income of a typical Wal-
Mart shopper is about $35,000 per year,
(versus) $50,000 for a Target shopper,"

he said.
Although fewer holiday shoppers than
expected turned out, the number of people
traveling by plane and car was expected
to surpass pre-Sept. 11 levels for the first
time, according to the American Auto-
mobile Association, which projected the
number of travelers would increase from
36.1 to 37.2 million.
Jim Rink, AAA spokesman for Mich-
igan, said most of the state residents
surveyed by the organization said the
modest improvement in the economy
was a factor in their decision to travel.
Seyhun said the consumer confidence
increase is due in part to the election
earlier this month. "The fact that Presi-
dent Bush won re-election and people
can forecast his policies better than a
new Kerry Administration certainly
removes an important piece of uncer-
tainty from consumer's lives," he said.
Curtin said the slight jump in the index
indicates consumers expect the economy
to grow more slowly next year.
"Consumers are not yet convinced
that the economy will produce signifi-
cant job gains over a sustained period of
time," he said.

STUDENTS
Continued from page 1A
either to get away from studying or to get
some more work done," he said.
Other international students left the
campus briefly to attend local Thanksgiv-
ing dinners.
Jason Chou, an Engineering senior
from Taiwan, said on Thanksgiving Day
he ate with other Taiwanese international
students and second generation Taiwanese
Americans at a dinner off campus.
Chou said he did not think too much of
the holiday until he arrived in the United
States. But after living in the country for
several years, Chou said, Thanksgiving
has become a somewhat ironic American
holiday to him.
On one hand, Thanksgiving is a time
for people to be grateful for what they
have, Chou said. "But look at the dining
halls. People waste food like crazy. It's
kind of a sarcastic or ironic thing about
Thanksgiving," he said.
Like many college students, Chou said
besides attending a Thanksgiving dinner,
he took advantage of the long weekend
break by sleeping in and cracking open

his textbooks to catch up on homework.
But by studying overseas, some interna-
tional students say they can't help but feel
a little left out during the holiday season.
While international students attending
the University can experience American
holidays, they forfeit the opportunity to
celebrate some more familiar holidays.
When she is in America, LSA sopho-
more Ji Hyun Kim said she celebrates
Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Kim said
studying abroad hardly ever affords her the
chance to celebrate the Korean holidays.
Such was the case for Korea's version
of Thanksgiving known as Chusok, which
was held in late September.
Although it's never been a big deal,
Kim said, "It's hard to celebrate holidays,
because whenever I'm at school I can't
really celebrate Korean Thanksgiving
because it's a different day and here, they
don't give any days off."
But Engineering freshman Yung-
Hsuan Chiu said studying in Michigan
still has its perks - Thanksgiving was not
only the first time she celebrated the holi-
day, but also the first time Chiu saw snow.
"It's very pretty. It makes people feel the
meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday."
