JOBS
Continued from page 1.
Gardner said the decline of manu-
facturing jobs relative to service-
industry jobs is part of a long-term
trend caused by improvements in
technology, which allow for increas-
es in worker productivity.
"As machines and new systems
make more products with fewer peo-
ple, you've got to have more people
on the other end, so we're going to
see a shift to sales and marketing
activities," Gardner said.
He also cautioned that many of the

hiring increases this year are due to
a need for companies to fill gaps in
employment and may not represent
"real job growth or expansion."
"They're in a position where they
haven't hired for three or four years,
and you get to a point where you just
have to add some people," he said.
"We could be in a whole different
kind of economy by next spring."

BAR
Continued from page 1
the Pretzel Bell, a former Ann Arbor res-
taurant serving beer and fast food, which
Savas called an "institution."
"It's going to be all new. It will fea-
ture a full kitchen, and we will be open
for finger foods, sandwiches, bar-type
food, big hamburgers, French fries," he
added.
At the new Mitch's, students will be
able to carve the names of their fra-
ternities and sororities on designated
wooden benches. The bar will keep its
bicycle-themed ddcor and feature more

televisions.
It's this kind of humble atmosphere
that appeals to Fox, who said Mitch's
was always a "top option" when decid-
ing on a bar.
"It's not as clubby as Rick's or Score-
keepers. I feel like there's less of a fra-
ternity scene there. It's also smaller,
more intimate," Fox said, adding that he
enjoys the privacy afforded by Mitch's
booths with high backs.
LSA senior Kaz McNellie also praised
the bar's laid-back setting.
"Mitch's just has a friendlier atmo-
sphere. The people who go there seem
to be cooler," McNellie said.

HOUSING
Continued from page 1
petence in understanding the needs of its
students.
Among these was its work during the
last presidential election. Because solicita-
tion is not allowed in the residence halls,
Souva said, the association lobbied to
allow the Michigan Student Assembly's
Voice Your Vote commission access to
the dorms for its voter registration drives.
"We collaborated with MSA so that
Voice Your Vote ended up registering
thousands of voters in the residence halls,"
Souva said.

Other accomplishments board members
pointed out were involvement with the Resi-
dential Life Initiative, a University program
to revitalize residential life on campus with
a new residence hall in place of the Frieze
Building and a new dining hall in the Hill
area. Souva said the association has student
members on all of the University's RLI
committees, with Keller serving on Uni-
versity President Mary Sue Coleman's task
force to ensure that the new residence halls
complies with students' needs.
The organization receives $25 from
each resident at the beginning of the year
and is responsible for allocating the funds
to different projects it deems important.
