You were great for the Minnesota
and Michigan State games the
last two times out, but in that
first half on Saturday, you were
completely lifeless. If you wonder
why opponents aren't scared of the
Big House, this game could be used
as Exhibit A. And don't even try to
complain about the noon start.
Now, it seems like most of you
stayed to the very end, and that's a
good thing. But that fact that that
is the only praise we can think of
is pretty sad. (Apparently the wave
was very well done, but we don't
really care.)
All in all, it was a pretty average
season for the Michigan Stadium
crowds. Outside of the last few
minutes against Minnesota and
the surreal fourth quarter against
Michigan State, the fans were pretty
subdued all season long. Granted,
most of the games weren't exactly
thrilling. For the season, the final
grade is: "You'll be a fine Michigan
alum."

Mattu & celebs take
a commanding lead
And then there were two. Chris
Burke, Gennaro Filice and Bob
Hunt insist they're not yet out of
the race, but they need to take a
closer look at the standings.
Why? Well, let's put it this way:
Sharad Mattu and Ann Arbor
celebrity Jim Brandstatter did
so well this week, they really
should have spent the weekend
in Las Vegas and not Ann Arbor.
Both went 12-2-1, and now have
a whopping six-game lead over
Burke and seven-game cushion
over Filice and Hunt. Burke, who
has been at Michigan forever,
says he can't remember anyone
ever having done so well in a
week of staff picks.
This is why Mattu is a little
disappointed to have to share the
glory with Brandstatter. But the
celeb deserves credit: He covers
the Wolverines and the Detroit
Lions, but still seems to have a
pulse on thetrest of the nation.
Hunt has put up his second
consecutive mediocre week,
which is actually pretty good
considering everyone else is so
unpredictable.

* WILDCATS

Walker of Breaston. "For whatever rea-
son, we just didn't tackle very well today.
I think we played a little over-excited, and
you start leaving your feet and diving,
and not many good players are tackled by
people who leave their feet."
Northwestern (4-4, 5-3) kept its upset
hopes alive as long as it did thanks to the
efforts of running back Noah Herron.
The senior had a 28-yard run to set up a
Northwestern field goal in the first quar-
ter. He then answered Hart's second score
by blowing through the Michigan line
and rumbling 68 yards for his Big Ten-
leading 12th rushing touchdown, cutting
the Wolverines' lead to 14-13 with 10:59
left in the third quarter. All told, Herron
finished with 156 yards on 23 carries.
Still, Herron's numbers were not
enough to overcome Michigan's offen-
sive explosion after halftime. The 35
points Michigan put on the scoreboard
in the second half marked the most
points the Wolverines had posted in a
half this season.
The offensive line's turnaround was at
the center of the performance, as Mich-
igan's front helped Henne put together a
stellar second half. He completed 9-of-10
passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns
in the final 30 minutes, and finished 19-
of-26 for 187 yards on the day.
__ Henne's most impressive moments

RYNINE"/DaiyN
Freshman quarterback Chad Henne has led Michigan to three fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

MATTU
Continued from page 1B
"He makes great strides every week," offen-
sive coordinator Terry Malone said. "That posi-
tion holds a lot of responsibility, and we've been
giving him more responsibility each week.
"He's really smart, and he never makes the
same mistake twice. Like any freshman, he's

behind and Chad has been struggling, we don't
have to be afraid tothrow the ball because he can
bring us back."
This is just the beginning. With a great guru in
quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler and great talent
surrounding Henne, the next three years in the
Big House could be pretty special.
"The beautiful thing about this position is
you're never where you're supposed to be," Loef-
