There will be a hint of maize mixed in with the red, white
and blue when the U.S. National Junior Hockey Team takes the
ice during winter break in North Dakota. The initial roster of
12 for the World Junior Championships was announced Thurs-
day with junior Al Montoya and sophomores Mike Brown,
Matt Hunwick and T.J. Hensick among those selected.
"I'm not surprised," Michigan coach Red Berenson. "Hen-
sick, Brown, Montoya and Hunwick all played in the develop-
ment program. They've been involved in that program, and
they went to their camp this summer, and they all did pretty
well. So I'm not surprised they were selected."
Montoya and Hunwick will be returning to the team they
won a gold medal with at the 2004 World Junior Champion-
ships. Montoya posted a 6-0 record with a 1.33 GAA, earning
top goalie honors. Hunwick, who played sparingly, was plus-
two during the six-game tournament.
"That's huge," Montoya said of his second selection. "Right
now, I'm just focusing on doing well (for Michigan), and, if I
do that, hopefully it will transfer over to the World Juniors."
Last year's finals pitted the U.S. team against the Canadi-
ans and Jeff Tambellini. With Tambellini no longer eligible
for the under-20 tournament, the Ann Arbor faithful won't
have to choose between Wolverines.
Berenson was quick to tip his cap to Team USA coach Scott
Sunderlin for selecting Brown, who isn't known for putting
pucks in the net. Brown's physical play and penalty killing
abilities can give his squad's special teams a boost.
"When you pick a team, you're not just picking scorers,"
Berenson said. "You pick guys like Brown who can kill pen-
alties and work hard and can do a lot of the dirty work."
This year's American entry features the most Wolverines to
ever appear in the tournament for Team USA, topping the pre-
vious high of three in the 1980, 1994 and 2002 tournaments.
"The players named (Thursday) represent some of the fin-
est college and junior players in the country," Sunderlin said
in a press release. "The high level of experience and leader-
ship that our veterans bring, combined with the energy and
skill of each new player will, I believe, make this team a sure
competitor in defending the championship."

Joining the team will not be an entirely new experience for
Brown and Hensick. The pair will join six of their teammates
from the 2000-01 U.S. National Development Under-17 Team
- including both Montoya and Hunwick.
"I know the other eight (non-Michigan) guys pretty well,"
Hensick said. "We're all excited, and we're looking forward
to it. There is going to be a lot of talk about it because of last
year's performance. So it's exciting."
In their time with the Under-17 team, all four Wolverines got a
chance to play in international competition. Hensick expects hard-
fought games while defending his country's championship. He antic-
ipates Team Canada - the 2004 silver medal team - will put up a

strong fight. The Canadians are expecting a large crop of returning
players, possibly including three locked-out NHL players.
"Playing against some of the top hockey players in the
world, it's going to be fast-paced games," Hensick said. "It's
quite an honor. To have a chance to play on the Under-20
team - especially on your own soil - it's going to be fun."
The number of Wolverines could grow in December when the
remaining 10 players are announced. Michigan freshman Kevin Porter
participated in the Team USA evaluation camp this past August. Porter
and fellow freshman Chad Kolarik were teammates on the silver medal
American team in the 2004 IIHF Under-18 Championships.
The tournament runs from Dec. 25 to Jan. 4.

How it happened: Through most of the first period of
Saturday's game, Miami seemed to skate with the Wolverines.
But at 17:40, senior centerman David Moss collected the puck at
center ice and fed his linemate, junior Jeff Tambellini, who was
skating down the ice to his left. Tambellini brought the puck
into the Miami zone and Moss stayed in the middle. The Miami
defender chose to stay with Tambellini - who had posted a hat
trick the night before - and Moss was left alone with Miami
goalie Brandon Crawford-West. Moss beat Crawford-West
glove-side on a one-timer to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
Analysis: This goal had its roots from the night before. Tam-
bellini's three goals on Friday forced Miami to focus more on
him on Saturday. Tambellini took advantage of his chance to pay
Moss back for his three helpers on Friday.

Far and wide: Blue families descend on Yost

Jeff Tambellini's breakout weekend was a bit more important than -
his statistics might indicate. Although the junior forward's five goals and
one assist over the two-game series against Miami
(Ohio) left coaches, players and fans impressed,
Tambellini was more concerned about a few special s
guests in the stands. 4
"I had my mom and two grandmothers (in town),"
said the Port Moody, B.C., native after Saturday's
game. "My two grandmothers had never seen Yost
(Ice Arena) or me play college hockey. It's great to
see them because I know that this may be their only chance to see me
play at Michigan."
Friday night was Parents' Night for the Michigan hockey team. Pre-
game introductions were altered from the normal routine, as players
skated out to meet their parents on a red carpet. Every player had at least
one relative in attendance, and most family members chose to make the

most of their time in the area.
