On the plus side, the end of the fourth quar- ter and overtime was absolutely ridiculous. Hopefully, you looked around the student section dur- ing overtime - because you will likely never again see 20,000 stu- dents popcorning to encourage the defense. But you would have had to stay until the end of the game to see that incredible scene, and those of you that took off early brought the hype-meter down. If you did leave early -first of all - shame on you. Secondly, you missed the great- est game ever played in Michigan Stadium, and possibly the greatest game in Michigan football history. Hope that nap on the couch and extra brew was worth it. Back to the good stuff, though. Those of you that stayed never threw in the towel. At 27-13, the crowd was starting to get juiced up, and at 27-20, it was pretty off the charts in there. Those of you who were there, pat yourself on the back. If you know someone who left, just hit them on the back - hard. t4 STAFF PICKS Predictions against the spread for 10/30/04 Chris Burke Gennaro Filice Bob Hunt Sharad Mattu Michigan State (+11)at Michigan, Minnesota (-17.5) at Indiana Iowa (-11) at linoIs Purdue (-9.5) at Northwestern Penn State (+6) at Ohio State Oklahoma (-12) at Oklahoma State Arizona State (+15.5) at Cal Tennessee (pick'em) at South Carolina Florida (+7) vs. Georgia N.C. Turns out, we were wrong. Superfan V Ryan Shinska put up a solid 8-6- 1 week, pulling the celebs into a first-place tie on the season with Sharad Mattu. Meanwhile, Mattu spent the final moments of the Michigan-Michigan State game worrying that Michigan would return an interception for a touch- down to notch a 14-point win and a cover. The biggest surprise of the week was the fact that Bob Hunt actually went over .500 - and got his best bet right. Everyone's favorite back- wards-hat wearing football writer, Gennaro Filice, fell two games back. Filice had taken the lead just a few weeks ago, but has been mediocre at best lately - though his decision to ride Cal every week has paid off, as the Bears seem to cover every Saturday. Chris Burke could have utilized that knowledge to his advantage, but instead went on his own, pick- ing Arizona State - and did the same with South Carolina. These decisions kept Burke in second. 56-58-4 (4-4) 62-52-4 (5-3) HUNT Contnued from page 1B ing back Mike Hart on a screen pass, Henne hrew to Edwards in the corner of the endzone igain. With another leaping catch, there was a >rand new ballgame. "If it's in his area, you know he's going to catch t," Henne said. When the game got into overtime, it seemed like t was certain that Edwards would have a say in he game's conclusion. After all, he got the Wol- verines into overtime in the first place. And that's Ihat happened in the third overtime. Henne saw edwards open coming across the middle of the ield, so he threw it to him. Edwards then jetted nto the endzone for the game-winning touchdown. even Carr, whose disputes with Edwards in previ- >us seasons have been well documented, became Y is biggest advocate. "I said several weeks ago, I think he's the best football player in the country, and I believe that," iarr said. "Braylon Edwards made plays today that I on't think anybody else can make." It's clear that the Wolverines would have lost if Edwards didn't snatch the game away from the Spar- ans. Until Edwards' catches turned the game around n the fourth quarter, the Wolverines were quickly leaded towards defeat. When Michigan State was up .7-7, Michigan was lucky that the score was not 28-7. And the Wolverines weren't even able to move the >all down the field. That's why the game seemed so bleak.
