NEWS The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 29, 2004 - 7 MSA Continuedfrom page 1 online. Once elected, MSA representa- tives hold their positions for one year. MSA's most recent activity includes work with Student Legal Services to sponsor a town hall meeting to edu- cate students on alcohol laws in Ann Arbor and common house lease- signing practices. The assembly also encouraged City Council to postpone discussion on a proposed ban on upholstered porch furniture over the summer. Other projects include Airbus, a program that offers students afford- able rides to the airport during Thanksgiving and winter breaks. MSA is also planning a web page on which students can rate their Ann Arbor landlords. For more information and an applica- tion to run for MSA representative, see the MSA website at www.msa.umich. edu. MESA Continued from page 1 University, some of which are under- represented. "Time is definitely a consideration, this being a very important year for our office," said Moon, who worked in student affairs while in Los Angeles. "I'm here, and I'm just going to put as much time and effort as I can to help this process along." Middleton, African American coordi- nator, will also try to achieve unity among the various organizations. Middleton was a graduate student in English at the Uni- versity, but is taking a leave of absence to work with MESA. Her last job in the Dental School was to help students who wanted to go into dentistry. Middleton said she will work to make sure different organizations know about each othr's events. She will also work to get small grants for students who want to go to conferences for their respective communities. Despite steep competition,.stand owners flourish DOGS Continued from page 1 to add "20-inch spinning rims" to the cart as well, to draw extra attention. Benny Benhart and Bob Roberts, owners of B&B hot dog stand, also located on the corner of South Univer- sity Avenue and South State Street, have been selling dogs for nine months and said they have been in the food service business for many years. The business partners said they hope to use the money they raise to open a new restaurant in Chelsea, Flat Out Delicious, which will serve ice cream, hot dogs, gourmet sandwiches and coffee. Currently, with the many vendors in close proximity, the competition is steep and every vendor is looking for an extra incentive. Dan's Dogs, for example, offers a "buy five, get one free" punch card. Dan Jofre said, "I use to sell hot dogs for 50 cents each, and then once I got regulars, I raised the price." In addition, he says kind gestures and conversation keep people coming back. To differentiate themselves, B&B offers the not-so-commonly sold veggie dogs and what Benhart calls "the best quality brats around." In addition, B&B sells chili and cheese, Coney dogs and two specialized mustards. After talking to students, the vendor plans to add New York-style hot dogs to the menu, which include onions and mustard. "With all the kids being away "I used to mai from homeaba d ha I thought it a ar an ax would be a of experience good idea to give them food service.. something from home," opportunity N Benhart said, referring to drinking and out-of-state d students. dog stand oui However, when it comes to what con- Co-owr sumers want, the two major factors are usually prices and location. "I usually go to the cheapest place," said LSA junior Tiffani Commander. Zhe Clampitt, an Ann Arbor resident, said, "I go to whichever stand is closer when I'm hungry." Before deciding to open their stand, the owners of B&B and Dan's Dogs researched locations, taking into account foot traffic, convenience of customers and accessibility to the public, they said. TI I Next a permit is filed with the Ann Arbor City Council, which ensures health con- ditions of the products and secures a location for the vendor. age at Most e a lot stands receive about in the 120 custom- ers a day, saw an Dan Jofre said. iith kids Benhart said: "We set up a hot get more of side the bars." a late crowd on Mon- day through - Benny Benhart Wednesday. °r, B&B hot dog stand Later in the week, it seems peo- ple get paychecks and can afford real food." And despite the low prices the ven- dors charge for their dogs, they say they make enough to support themselves on hot dog stands. But like every job, vend- ing has it pros and cons. Dan Jofre said he meets exciting people everyday, but the hours are long, the weather is unpre- dictable and the vendors receive no health insurance. B&B sets up on the corner of South University Avenue and South State Street during the week and then relocates to the Kerrytown farmer's market during the weekend. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights they set up outside Necto on Liberty Street. "I used to manage at a bar and have a lot of experience in the food service. I saw an opportunity with kids drinking and set up a hot dog stand outside the bars," Benhart said. Although Dan's Dogs and B&B are located next to each other, they said both receive good business. "There is more than enough business to go around here," said Benhart. However, not all vendors have been able to set up their. carts where they wanted. Sebastian Escalada, owner of Hot Dogs on the Run, has filed a law- suit in the Washtenaw County Circuit Court because he was denied a vend- ing space on the high traffic intersec- tion of on the corner of State Street and North University Avenue. The owner would not comment, as the case is still in court. But for those who are worried about the loss of the vendor to the cold winter months, the vendors plan to gut it out through the long months. the michigan daily 2 to 6 Bedroom Houses/Apartments All The Amenities Great Prices Best Service 734-668-7955 gam-9pm LARGE FURNISHED 2 & 3 bdrm. apt. on S.
