RAY OF LIGHT HOLLY GOLJGHTLY EXPLORES VINTAGE SOUNDS ON NEW LP By Jerry Gordinier Daily Arts Writer Miss the warmth of Light-Bright? Had trouble parting with Pogs? It's simple: Everyone loves vintage. Scouring the local Salvation Army for a Grateful Dead tie-dye or spending an excessive amount of money acquiring a gloomy gray Nintendo, the truth becomes apparent: Some Holly things are timeless. Among Golightly these things is the bitter sweet Slowly But Surely crooning of Holly Golightly. Holly Golightly walked Damaged Goods onto the scene in 1991 to found the all-girl garage band Thee Headcoastees, a Billy Childish splinter group. Going solo in 1995, her work found little commercial success: often heard of, but rarely heard. It wasn't until 2003 that Golightly had her first taste of recognition, col- laborating with long-time friends Jack and Meg White to produce the warm and fuzzy closer to The White Stripes' Elephant, "It's True That We Love One Another." This bit of fate brought much acclaim to Golightly's July 2003 release, Truly She Is None Other. With her latest album, aptly titled Slowly But Surely, Golightly proves herself worthy of hype. The cover of the album portrays a worn and weary Depression-era dance marathon with Holly staring out from the shoulder of some faceless suit, com- pletely exhausted yet wholly content. Her sweet red lips seem to be hiding a secret. There is a haunting quality to Golightly's voice as she professes on the opening track "Your love is a lie / And you love a liar / The seat where you sat / Has gone on the fire." Production is absent, giving way to a lullaby's standing bass line, minimalist guitar progressions and hushed drum work. Holly resonates against the walls of a long-gone lounge, singing with a limitless timbre and echoic quality that cut straight to the listener's soul. Golightly embraces her simplicity, mournfully taking the lis- tener back to that Depression-era clarity and heart- wrenching plainness. On the "The Luckiest Girl," Golightly takes the listener forward into a psychedelic '70s-era freak- out. Don't be alarmed if you feel a little high as you fall victim to disorienting sitar riff and a busy organist hammering the pipes. Even here, however, Golightly delivers a bitter message: "Every time, I find, I see a different kind / Of misery seeping through the wall / And I get to thinking how do you live this lie / And I do believe you live them all." There is a definite coherency to Slowly But Sure- ly. Golightly dabbles into many genres and sounds, but never strays from her unpretentious elegance. Driving along, flipping through the radio, it would be pretty hard to put a date on this sensual album. This won't be a problem, however. In the fast-paced world of indie and irony and sound bites and Top- 50 lists, there's no time for a break, no place for silence as sound. Golightly won't be on the radio any day soon. She's from a time that's passed. "The Incredibles" - Pixar Animation, the genius behind such hits as "Finding Nemo" and "Toy Story," is at it again. Still teaming with Disney, its latest release "The Incrdibles" hits theaters Nov. 6 and, no pun intended, looks incredible. Telling the story of an over-the-hill superhero getting one last shot at saving the day and featur- ing the voice of Samuel L. Jackson, "The Incredibles" looks like a defi- nite fall hit. "Lost" - While the idea of people stranded on an island seems played out, "Lost" takes the concept to a whole new level. The ABC drama develops characters brilliantly, reveal- ing the character's dark secrets and constantly keeping viewers off-balance. Fear of the island and tension among the group members is slowly building, and the result is one heart- 4 pounding hour of television. Courtesy of Pixar 1 tacks Kerry's Vietnam record ry's character by showing him as deceitful, unpa- Unfit for triotic and overly Command ambitious. Authors Jerome By John E. O'Neill Corsi and John and Jeroe R. Corsi O'Neill seek to demonstrate that rnry Pbihn Kerry is "Unfit for Command" or not qualified to be commander- in-chief, with two main arguments. First, the book attacks Kerry's mili- tary record. For example, Corsi and O'Neill contest the merit of Kerry's service in Vietnam by attributing his medals to false claims of brav- ery and self-inflicted injury. The book's second point is that Kerry's protest of the Vietnam war was det- rimental to the American war effort and worked to spread communism in Vietnam. The book has nothing nice to say about Kerry, except that he is a skilled debater. Corsi and O'Neill mostly use the testimonies of Vietnam veterans to dispute the stories in Kerry's biog- the Vietnam War. It seems almost natural that he would disapprove of Kerry, who was an outspoken leader of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and whose testimony in front of the Fulbright Commit- tee claimed that American soldiers were committing war crimes in Vietnam. There are moments in the book when it appears that the authors let their individual feelings about the Vietnam War interfere in their analysis of Kerry's ability to be president. O'Neill seems to take personally Kerry's charge of Ameri- can war crimes in Vietnam, and the author appears overzealous in criti- cizing Kerry. Nevertheless, O'Neill served on the same Swift boat as Kerry after the senator departed, which lends a certain level of authority to O'Neill's claims. Regardless of whether you believe the criticisms and negative portrayals of Kerry in this book, the strong sense of Viet- nam veterans' disapproval of Kerry cannot be denied. The appendix at the end of the book includes a let- ter signed by 200 of the Swift boat veterans from Kerry's unit.
