NEWS The Michigan Daily -Tuesday, October 26, 2004 -7 NEW YORKER Continued from page 1 "Strangers with Candy" and HBO's "Sex and the City," will hold a conversation with humorist Andy Borowitz on Saturday. The magazine is touring college campuses to reach out to its subscribers and college students. Ann Arbor is a major sub- scribing hub for the magazine, said Rhonda Sherman, The New Yorker's director of special events. "We thought it would be really great if we could find a way to bring a taste of New York to those outside of New York," said Sherman, who conceived of the idea of the tour. Every year, the magazine holds a festival in New York celebrating the arts, but many subscribers outside the area cannot make it. But the main objective is to reach out students. "If we picked up a few readers along the way, that would only be a good thing," Sherman added. The magazine will offer discounted subscriptions to students in its lounge in the Michigan Union. A wide swathe of its writers will attend the college cam- puses. Thursday's panel with Wright includes reporters with investigative, human interest, business and war cov- erage experience. And, while the University got Hersh as a speaker, Georgetown University will get Hendrik Hertz- berg, another noteworthy writer, and the University of Texas will host Anthony Lane, the magazine's witty and sardonic arts critic. In Thursday's panel, Wright predicted that the journalists would discuss what makes them suited to write particular stories. r "The world is full of wonderful stories, but they're only wonderful if someone recognizes what's wonderful about them," he said. The chant of hymns wafted from church services and a U.N. helicopter roared over- head as the operation got under way in Bel Air, a poor neighborhood full of supporters of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The crackdown came two days after the government said it would root out gangs that have blockaded areas of cer- tain neighborhoods. Bel Air residents accuse police of attacking them without cause and making illegal arrests. Haiti's capital has been convulsed by violence since police shot and killed two protesters at a Sept. 30 march to demand the return of Aristide, who went into exile amid an armed revolt in Febru- ary. At least 56 people have been killed, including the officer shot Sunday. The operation began at 5 a.m. and con- tinued into the afternoon, the first during the unrest to last several hours. Previous incursions into the neighborhood were brief because police encountered gunfire. A bulldozer pushed burnt-out cars down Rue Macajoux to the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where front loaders lifted them into garbage trucks. Graffiti scrawled across a church wall called for the return of Aristide. Peacekeepers used a sledgehammer to knock down the second-story wall of a corner building used by snipers, said Gen. Americo Salvador, commander of the Brazilian brigade that is leading the U.N. mission to stabilize Haiti. Police CommissionerJean-Brice Ralph said his men detained two unarmed men "because they are known bandits." At the top of Rue Macajoux, a group of young men jeered at police officers. "All we want is to have President Aristide returned," said Aristide Carlo, a 20-year-old student. "The police accuse us of terrorism, but it is they who are the bandits." Human rights lawyer Renan Hedou- ville said Sunday that his organization has received reports of women and young girls being raped in many of the troubled areas in Port-au-Prince, especially Bel Air. Many of the reports involve former Haitian sol- diers who helped oust Aristide, he said. Besides the Brazilian troops, about 100 police officers from Benin, Canada, France and Spain took part in the operation. Daniel Moskaluk, a spokesman for an international police force training Haitian officers, said Jordanian and Haitian riot police would remain in the neighborhood. That PUNCH CARD Continued from page 1. cal Scan Voting. So far, voting systems in 200 cities have been updated and the state will work to "ensure elec- tion integrity" Land said when she announced the decisions to purchase optical scan systems. These reforms took place before the August primaries and Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for Land, said no additional replacements of old equipment would take place until after this year's election. Chesney said this was because voters who did not have updated voting systems during the pri- maries should not have to face a new voting meth- od for the first time during a presidential election. For this election, then, cities in Michigan that will be using punch cards and lever voting systems are still at risk of the hanging, dim- pled and pregnant chads that caused problems in Florida in 2000. But Judy Dudzinski, city clerk of Dearborn Heights - a city using punch cards - said they are prepared for the upcoming elections and that she was not concerned about facing prob- lems similar to the last presidential election. "If two corners (of the chad) are out, then that will be a vote. That's the law," she said. Dudzinski added that as soon as Wayne County approves the new voting equipment, Dearborn Heights would change to an optical scan voting system. Critics of Land were dealt a blow in a related matter Sunday when a federal court of appeals ruled that provisional ballots cast in the wrong pre- "If two corners (of the chad) are out, then that will be a vote. Democrats had advocated a system in which provisional ballots would be counted even if they were cast in the wrong precinct but as long as they were in the right city, town or village.
