But not all Catholics appreciated Maida's video, which the archdiocese told all of its churches to show on the same Sunday two weeks ago. At Our Lady of Refuge, a Catholic church in Orchard Lake, Father Francis Dister spoke out against anti-gay discrimina- tion before showing the video. "He went on in a really enlightened way about his nephew, who is gay.... He said the church does not need any more homophobia, does not need any more discrimination," said Elizabeth Ferszt, a Catholic from West Bloomfield who attended the service. Soon after the start of the video, Ferszt, who supports gay civil unions, thanked The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 22, 2004 - 7 the priest and walked out of mass. The church's support of Proposal 2, Maluchnik said, is based on its com- mitment to preserving the institution of marriage. He dismissed the argument, adopted by opponents of the proposed amendment and by other church orga- nizations including the Presbytery of Detroit, that the proposal would take away some health insurance and other benefits for same-sex couples employed by the state. "The church does not believe that this will take away benefits from anybody," he said. "I don't think the word 'benefits' is in the proposal." But many disagree with that contention, even within the Archdiocese of Detroit. Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, the archdio- cese's auxiliary bishop, said this week in an interview with the gay-oriented maga- zine Between the Lines that he is against the proposal and the church's activities in support of it. "First of all, the law already says that marriage is between a man and a woman and I don't think we need a constitutional amendment," the magazine quoted Gumbleton as say- ing. "Second, the text as I've seen it is too open-ended, and people who are living as partners would be denied medical benefits. ... I think it's a cruel overreaction against homosexual people, and I think it's unnecessary." Proposal 2 would amend the state con- stitution to define marriage as between "one man and one woman," and prohibit the state from recognizing any other arrangement "as a marriage or similar union for any purpose." Dana Hoole, spokesman for Coalition for a Fair Michigan, said there is little dis- agreement that the proposal would take away benefits from some gay couples. CONFERENCE Continued from page 1 kjian, a co-organizer of the conference and the director of the University's Aca- demic Programs in Armenian Studies, said many discussions will take place that anyone interested in Armenian or Middle East politics will find fascinating. Members of the Armenian Studies Program, one of the groups hosting the conference, hope that it will facilitate a discussion among powerful people who will reflect on and perhaps examine the mistakes in policy decisions made in the 1990s that led to bloody conflicts and unstable governments. A civil wars is currently taking place in Georgia, while Armenia and Azerbaijan have long been engaged in conflict. Addi- tionally, elections in Armenia have been deemed unfair by analysts. LSA sophomore Alex Sarkesian con- siders himself 100 percent Armenian although he was born in the United States, and he said on a recent visit to the country "I saw the graves of the people who have died fighting in the conflicts." "I am attending this conference because, not only is it very important for students and the community to become better informed about what is going on, but this is an excit- ing opportunity for change." Participants in the panel discussions include Terhi Hakala, Finland's ambas- sador to Armenia; John Evans, the U.S. ambassador to Armenia; and Prof. Hosse- in Seifzadeh of Tehran University in Iran. The conference also offers the oppor- tunity for students to meet diplomats and scholars and talk with the people whom they have read about in textbooks. "This will bring the politics of Armenia to life," Libaridian said. Following Libaridian's speech was a panel discussion titled "Evolving Inter- national Relations and the South Cau- caus." The panel included sociology Prof. Michael Kennedy from the University of Michigan, Vitaly Naumkin, the direc- tor of the International Center for Stra- tegic and Political Studies in Russia and international relations Prof. Hadi Semati from Tehran University. Today's events include a panel discus- sion titled "The World as Seen by the South Caucasus," from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and one titled "The South Cauca- sus As Seen by the Regional Powers;" from 2 to 3:30 p.m. All sessions are free, open to the public and take place at the Alumni Center, near the Michigan League.
