NEWS The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 13, 2004 - 7A Th .ihgnDi-Mnday.ISente7ber 1. 2004 .+-r 7Ar TEXTBOOKS Continued from page IA two California bills aimed at high textbook prices urges publishers to avoid bundling books as well as printing new editions. 1 The other bill sets up a process by which schools can adopt textbook rental programs and aims to decrease students' textbook expenditures by up to 50 percent. The congressional hearing regarding textbook costs took place in July before a subcommittee of the U.S. House Education Committee. Among those testifying were a represen-I tative from CALPIRG and a representative the michigan daily from the Association of American Publish- ers. Bruce Hildebrand, executive director of higher education for AAP, says research shows that over the last twelve consecutive semesters, student expenditures on text- books have an average of 2.5 percent each year over the last 12 semesters, which is in line with inflation. Hildebrand also said new editions are often necessary to accommodate devel- oping information as well as the growing diversity of students. With regard to bundling books, Hildeb- rand said, "Unless it's thrown in as a sales incentive, you're only getting in the bundle what the professors want you to get." But professors are not to blame, he added. "Professors's goal is to educate the students." Hildebrand said a student's first priority should be his or her education, and textbook costs are relatively low in com- parison to how much they spend on other items. "Students are losing their priority to cell phones, footwear, (and) entertain- ment," he said. Still, students are obligated to spend a lot on college necessities. "It's getting more expensive to pay for tuition, and it's harder to pay rent," said Carolyn Hwang, chair of students for Public Interest Research Group in Michigan and an LSA senior. "We don't need textbooks to be more of a financial burden than they have to be," she said. Hwang said that PIRGIM, the Michigan branch of Public Interest Research Group, may consider taking on the issue of rising textbook costs in the future. "I think that it's a very important campaign and it's very relevant to U of M students," she added. The issue is also relevant to local book- stores, which have had to make accom- modations to sell textbooks at affordable prices. Approximately 25 percent of the books Shaman Drum sells are used, said Karl Pohrt, the store's owner. "You can't be in this business without selling used books," he said. Used books are one way students can reduce the cost of textbooks, Blackledge said. He said he suggests web sites like Amazon.com, eCampus.com, and Best- BookBuys.com, which are good for find- ing used books. He said students can also purchase cheaper books if they buy from overseas, particularly by visiting Amazon's United Kingdom site, www.amazon.co.uk. Book-swapping sites are also available for students to exchange textbooks with other students, such as CampusBookSwap. COO. Also, students should check to see if they can use an older edition of a book if there have not been significant changes from one edition to the next, Blackledge added.
