I 12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 10, 2004 PROCRASTINATION STATION MICHIGAN 21 NOTRE DAME 42 PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES: Michigan coach Sharad Mattu: "Before Wednesday's practice, QB #7 notified me that his shoulder was feel- ing sore. We had planned on playing both him and QB #12. (Sigh) Maybe next week." "No, our other QB #7." "I have total confidence in HB #5. We didn't run the ball because that was what the defense gave us. Now, QB #12 had four interceptions, so we'll have to go back and look at the tape." "Now why would you ask a stupid question like that?" "We'll make up for this next year. We'll be be doing 42 pushups and 42 wind sprints for the next 52 weeks." Notre Dame coach Chris Burke: "Well, 38-0 is a distant memory. We could have ended it 35-21, but ... well ... have fun with that for the next year Michigan." "WR #5 had 183 yards and WR #21 had 154 yards. I don't have anything to say - except this - Michigan couldn't have covered a 5-year-old today." "My guess is that HB #5 won't start for Michigan next week. I'm pretty sure three carries for -2 yards is one of the worst performances in the history of football." "Yes, we fumbled seven times. But we only lost three of them. Next question." FILE PHOTO Notre Dame will try to keep Michigan's Braylon Edwards under wraps and prevent another embarrassing loss to the Wolverines. IRISH Continued from page 10 Willingham balked at such a propo- sition. "I guess I'll say I'm surprised that Coach Carr has included us," Willingham said. "But I thank him for doing so." With the golden dome on a down- ward slope, the possibility of a victory against Michigan means as much as ever before. Although this year's Notre Dame schedule is weaker than in previous years, the Fighting Irish's loss to BYU lends one to believe that any given week could be a struggle. A win over a heated rival and top-10 opponent would begin to call off the pro- gram's detractors. The Fighting Irish are up to the challenge. "Coming into this game a lot of people aren't giving us a chance," defensive end Justin Tuck said. "We are going to surprise a lot of people this week. If we play our football then we can hang with any- one in the country. We didn't do that last week so we have to redeem ourselves this week against Michi- gan." * Before every football game this season, two of the Daily football writers will take the week- end's matchup to the PlayStation 2. * For this week's matchup, Sharad Mattu coached the Wolverines and Chris Burke took the helm for the Fighting Irish. * Play of the game - Down 21-14, Michigan QB #12 fires an errant pass that is picked off by Notre Dame's CB #24 and returned for a touch- down. Tough to run an out-and-in when TE #88 refuses to cut in. * Player of the game - Notre Dame QB #10. All the hype for Michigan's defense went straight out the window as QB #10 went 16-for-27 for 403 yards and three touchdowns, all the while picking on Michigan CB #3, who was burned repeatedly. "Four picks he is." for QB #12. He's still hurt ... at least, I hope STAFF PICKS Predictions against the spread from 9/7/04 o. Dennis Lee has. The engineering senior from Saline got the opportunity after a practice during the week before the Miami (Ohio) game. But that's a privilege of being the drum major of the Michigan Marching Band. Lee practiced for the position since the conclusion of last season. Then he competed with two other contestants in front of the entire band for the right to star each Saturday. He then won the honor through a band-wide vote. He also mentioned that he'll be taking his hat off in a game coming in the near future. Now Lee takes his luck as the first celebrity contestant in this year's Michigan Daily staff picks. Lee believes that Michigan is going to cover in South Bend tomorrow. He also thinks he'll be spending his holiday break in Miami, when the Wolverines run the table and head to the Orange Bowl. But for now, let's see how he does against the Daily prognosticators. 0 We've got Cupid tied up so love* won't tie You down! ,& a W a*= q
