VIGIL
Continued from page 1
are no longer physically here, they are
not forgotten," Eckerle said.
In addition to students, numerous
Ann Arbor residents, such as Francie
Goodridge, attended the event. Hold-
ing a sign that read "1,000 Dead,"
Goodridge came to the vigil with her
husband out of concern for how the war
is progressing.
"My son is in Korea - he was a
2003 (Reserve Officer Training Corp)
graduate - so I support the troops tre-
mendously. I just don't believe in their
use for the wrong reasons, and Iraq is
the wrong reason. We were lied to,"
Goodridge said.
Organizers of the vigil said they
wanted to focus on the loss of life in
general.
"I also want to emphasize that this
vigil isn't just for the soldiers, but it's
also to commemorate the Iraqi people
that have died," Hardikar said.
Yet in the midst of the silence, an
unknown man and woman - who held
signs saying, "Free Palestine" -inter-
rupted the vigil by calling the Ameri-
can troops "murderers."

"40,000 Iraqis have been murdered.
Think about the people you have helped
to kill," shouted the two people. Wl(o
refused to identify themselves.
Their protests were quickly
denounced by the vigil's attendees. Har-
dikar and other organizers explained to
the protestors that holding the vigil was
not a sign of support for the war.
Instead, the vigil aimed to gain sup-
port for the protest against the war.
"More and more people are coming out
against this occupation everyday. I per-
sonally am committed to Iraqi sover-
eignty and bringing our troops home,"
she said.
RC senior Julia Garlotte also said it's
important for people to acknowledge
what is happening in Iraq.
"It's definitely important for people
to recognize what's going on because
so many people are turning a blind eye.
Hopefully people will see what's going
on and ask what it's all about," Garlotte
said.
The idea for the vigil came from
MoveOn.org, a liberal organization that
encouraged people to organize vigil
across the country in order to com-
memorate the 1,000 troops who have
died in Iraq.
