But we figured: Who better to pick the bowl games than someone with the name of the game Michigan is playing in? The 83-year-old mother of 11 has lived in North Dakota her entire life, but her kids and grandchildren are spread out around the country. Hbr two oldest sons enlisted in the Navy, which fueled her decision to pick the Midshipmen in the Emerald Bowl. She also has grandchildren in Boise, Hawaii, Colorado and Texas - which helped her reason through some tough choices. Trying desperately to overtake Mattu, Burke opposed the leader in 19 different games. \ SEiL''f" ... y 4uym E} - MIH A ' 4 \xt ''.x ""k 4 R Arizona State Louisvifle Arizona State Boise State Miami Florida Georgia Georgia Texas A&M Texas A&M Florida State Florida State Iowa Texas' Pittsburgh Auburn Oklahoma Pittsburgh 91-91-5 (&5) LSU Texas. Jose Bosch Daily Sports Writer It's the most wonderful time of the year - 22 days, 28 bowls and one sore rear end. The die-hards will take a sab- batical from mid-December until the morning of Jan. 5 - deserting friends, family and personal hygiene. For some, watching Michigan and the other BCS bowls is more than enough. But why not watch the five other Big Ten teams in action? CAPITOL ONE BOWL No. 13 IowA (7-1, 9-2) vs. No. 11 LSU (6-2, 9-2) - JAN. 1, 1 P.M., ABC LSU is riding a six-game winning streak, while Iowa comes in having won its last seven. This game should make both offenses look weak, as the third-ranked LSU and 10th-ranked Iowa defenses bat- tle in muggy Central Florida. This will be a low-scoring defensive skirmish, but the Big Ten loves that kind of game. Iowa 13, LSU 10 GAYLORD HOTELS Music CITY BOWL ALABAMA (3-5, 6-5) vs. MINNESOTA (3-5, 6-5) - DEC. 31, NOON, ESPN After a 5-0 start, Minnesota has lost five of its last six games. Alabama has been a decent team, but is has struggled to survive in the harsh environment of the SEC. The Crimson Tide's defense has been nothing short of amazing this season, finishing the year at No. 2 in total yards allowed. That will be a big prob- lem for the running back combo of soph- omore Laurence Maroney and junior Marion Barber III. Rooooooooll Tide! Alabama 30, Minnesota 9 MASTERCARD ALAMO BOWL OKLAHOMA STATE (4-4, 7-4) vs. No. 22 OHIO STATE (4-4, 7-4) - DEC. 29, 8 P.M., ESPN Ohio State matches up against Oklahoma State in the "Battle of the OSUs." The Cowboys are a better team than their 7-4 record implies - two of their losses came against in- state rival No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 6 Texas. Expect the Buckeyes' defense to try and force Oklahoma State to use the passing game - No. 111 in the nation. But the Cowboys won't back down and should make this game close. Put the game on the shoulders of Lou Groza Award winner, senior Mike Nugent Ohio State 34, Oklahoma State 31 OUTBACK BOWL No. 7 GEORGIA (6-2, 9-2) vs. No. 16 WISCONSIN (6-2, 9-2) - JAN. 1, 11 A.M., ESPN Georgia senior quarterback David Greene's numbers this season speak for themselves - 2,244 yards, 18 touch- downs and just two interceptions. The Badgers just want to salvage a season that looked promising until they choked in back to back weeks against Michigan State and Iowa. This game will probably be like a home game for the Bulldogs, so the atmosphere will definitely be against Wisconsin. Georgia 38, Wisconsin 12 VITALIS SUN BOWL No. 24 ARIZONA STATE (5-3, 8-3) vs. PURDUE (4-4, 7-4) - DECEMBER 31, 2 P.M., CBS This game will feature more bombs than Whoopi Goldberg's career. Ari- zona State is No. 5 and Purdue is No. 4 in passing offense. Purdue sig- nal-caller Kyle Orton and Sun Devil quarterback Andrew Walter are going to have a field day in El Paso. Tell grandpa to make sure his pacemaker has fresh batteries, because this one will be a thriller. The Big Ten gets the nod in a shootout.
