MICHIGAN 68 By Matt Venegoni Daily Sports Writer Sometimes a team's best player does not perform up to expectations. On days when this happens, the rest of the team needs to pick up the slack. Going into the season, Michigan women's basketball coach Cheryl Burnett said that Tabitha Pool would be the team's cornerstone. So far through the early season, Pool has indeed been the leader for the young Wolverines. In Saturday night's game she struggled a bit, but her teammates stepped up their play to lead Michigan to a 68-48 victory over IUPUI. With Pool having an off day, four other Michigan players scored in double figures and spurred the team effort. "That balance is a wonderful thing to have," Burnett said. "We have a lot of players playing hard and we're exe- cuting much better." Freshman point guard Becky Flip- pin set the tone for the balanced effort. She scored the first five points of the game, draining a quick 3-pointer to start the game and then sprinting ahead of the pack for an easy layup. After those fast five points, Flippin went on to score seven more for a career-high 12 points. "Coach really said in practice what we need to do and how we're going to do it," Flippin said. "(Freshman) Kris- ta (Clement) and I kind of had a little bond time before the game and that's what we thought we would do." With Flippin providing an early scoring threat, Pool was able to get free. Although she struggled from the field - shooting just 5-of-17 - she was able to create opportunities for herself and the team. She scored four straight points, then dished out an assist on Clement's 3-pointer to put Michigan up 14-7. "I thought Pool did like she is sup- posed to do," IUPUI coach Shann Hart said. "She was a leader for the team and making the people around her better." Although Michigan did not shoot well from the field - 37 percent for the game - the Wolverines were able to create scoring opportunities with their defense. Michigan forced 26 turnovers, which led to 31 points. "I thought that they did a good job on defense of trapping in the half court," Hart said. With the defense creating more opportunities, the Michigan offense capitalized. Using quick ball move- ment, the Wolverines wore out the Jaguars. Fluid ball reversal and skip passes led to high-percentage layups for Michigan. Two of the recipi- ents of those layups were freshmen Ta'Shia Walker and Katie Dierdorf. Walker came off the bench to score 11 points in 14 minutes while Dier- dorf chipped in 10 points. "Our ball movement was a lot a faster tonight," Flippin said. "We worked it around the team to get a lot of shots." Burnett recognized Michigan's struggles on offense in the second half, but also saw progress being made. She believes that her team is starting to look to the right places on offense and getting some good possessions. Those productive possessions and a balanced effort are giving Burnett's team con- fidence heading toward the end of the nonconference slate. Helvey tied for a team-high seven rebounds, while Walker scored 11 points in just 14 minutes of play. "I really thought our players reacted well," Burnett said. "The team concept is far superior to what happens to I', and we just needed to make sure we re-emphasized that." BITTERSWEET HOMECOMING: Pinckney native and IUPUI junior Anne-Marie Tupper had a career day in her return to the Ann Arbor area. After a quiet first half in which she didn't attempt a single field goal, the 5-foot- 9 guard caught fire after the break. Tupper spurred the Jaguars' second half comeback attempt with sharp shoot- ing from beyond the arc, drilling four of her five 3-point attempts. She finished with a team-high and career-high 14 points in the Jaguars' losing effort. "She really, really shot the basketball extremely well, and gave them a lot of confidence toward the end of the game," Burnett said. "I really felt like we started guarding her like we guard great players." Despite lighting up the Crisler Arena scoreboard in her return home, Tupper was visibly dejected fol- lowing the loss. "I haven't been home in a while," Tupper said. "But it's hard to lose." NOTES: Freshman Sierrah Moore made her first career appearance with 25.1 seconds left in the game. The Long Beach, Calif., native did not attempt a shot... Senior Tabitha Pool grabbed seven rebounds, bringing her all- time total to 631. The center contributed 15 strong minutes of low-post play in the Dec. 6 victory over UNLV and followed that performance with a career- high 11-point effort against Eastern Michigan. In 29 min- utes of play Saturday night, Dierdorf put in 10 points and added two blocks and three steals, both career bests. "Having a presence in the low post really makes a difference," Burnett said. "And that's the difference that Katie Dierdorf gives us." Like Dierdorf, Clement's play has improved recently. After coming up with the game-winning assist in the UNLV game, Clement poured in a career-high 12 points against Eastern Michigan, on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-9 guard continued to play well Saturday night, notching 11 points and dishing out four assists. It was her first start since the Wolverines' season- opener against Alabama.
