His team couldn't hold the lead, however, and eventually fell, 8-3. Matt Hunwick (Michigan) As if his hat trick on Friday wasn't enough, Hunwick tallied two assists in the second game. One helper was for the game-tying goal, and one was for the game winner. "His ability to deal with his disease and perform at the high level he has is unbeliev- able." , . ° ; '; Sigalet had kept his condition out of public knowledge, only alerting his family and coach- es upon the initial discovery. Since Sigalet's diagnosis, he has missed just three games due to his illness, including his absence on Saturday. Junior Jon Horrell got the start in Sigalet's place against Michigan, whose players and coaches learned of the announce- ment just before the game started. Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. Vision, muscles and reflexes are affected by the disorder, which can also cause numbness. Sigalet - who made last year's All-CCHA First Team and was named to the All-CCHA Preseason Second Team at the start of this sea- son - was a seventh-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins in 2001. His shoes were big ones for Horrell to fill against a resilient and tal- ented Michigan squad. "It was a bit nerve-wracking at first," Horrell said. "You find out in the morning that your goaltending partner is kind of sick and he might not be able to play. You just have to get ready to go. It's hard coming into a game against one of the top teams in the nation." In a statement, Sigalet cited the desire to help others with multiple sclerosis, along with the possibility of learning more about the disease, as reasons for going public with his condition. "What (Sigalet) has done and how he's han- dled himself through the first half of the sea- son has been as courageous as anything I've ever been around from an athlete," Paluch said. "Certainly, I know our players and our staff certainly learn a lot and draw a lot from Jordan over the last nine months and as we move for- ward on this." Sigalet tops Bowling Green's all-time save percentage list with a career mark of .915. His 3.00 goals-allowed per game ranks second in Falcons history. Sigalet's 1,140 saves during last year's regular season were the most by any goalie in the country. "I was really sorry to hear about Jordan Sigalet and his situation," Michigan coach Red Berenson said after the game. B-DAY FOR T.J: During the second period of Friday's game, the crowd at Yost Ice Arena sang "Happy Birthday" for sophomore for- ward T.J. Hensick. Hensick, who turned 19, responded by scoring the game-winning goal 1:09 into the third. "I was talking to Al (Montoya) at the pregame meal, and I was like, 'You know, it would be interesting to see if (the crowd sings)' because I remembered (Montoya) getting one last year," Hensick said. "It was nice of the crowd - to see the support from them." But Hensick wasn't through after scoring Michigan's fourth goal. Michigan's leading scorer with 24 points, Hensick assisted on Kevin Porter's goal five minutes later, which gave Michigan a 6-3 lead. He added his sec- ond goal of the night 15:03 into the final period to push the Wolverines' lead to four. Hensick's two goals and three points both tied season highs. COMEBACK KIDS: Michigan's comeback from a 3-0 deficit on Friday marked the first time since March 26, 1999, that the Wolverines won a game after trailing by three goals. The last time came against Denver in the NCAA East Regional in Worcester, Mass. Michigan ulti- mately won the game, 5-3. The Wolverines came back, but settled for a 4-4 tie, after fall- ing behind to Western Michigan by three goals on Jan. 20, 2001. "I just put my stick on the ice, and he shot it off my stick, and it went in." In the second period, the puck took some strange bounces. Just 15 seconds into the period, the puck ricocheted off the boards and Mon- toya found himself out of position behind the net. He dove back in front of the net and made a sprawl- ing save. But exactly one minute later, the Wolverines wouldn't be so lucky. Falcons freshman forward Derek Whitmore dumped the puck into the Michigan zone along the right boards. Montoya left the net to play the puck and had no chance when the puck mysteriously changed direction and slid into the open net. "It was a crazy game," Berenson said. "I don't know whether it's the pucks they use or we just bring out the worst or the best in that rink. But ever since I've been here, every time we come to Bowling Green, it's crazy. We had a bounce off the boards, and I don't know if it's ever bounced off the boards like that into the net." The bounces weren't the only odd occurrences in Saturday's game. "And the thing that con- cerned me was that he only had four or five shots in the first 16 games on the power play. See what happens when you shoot the puck?" The sophomore's prolific night increased his season goal count expo- nentially, raising his total from one to four. His offensive contribution was especially timely because of senior defenseman Eric Werner's absence. In Thursday's practice, Werner collided with Chad Kolarik and injured his knee. According to Berenson, Werner will be sidelined for approximately two more weeks. Prior to the games this weekend, Werner had netted five goals this season while the rest of the defensive core had combined for just two. Appropriately, Werner was the last Wolverine defenseman to register a hat trick. He accomplished the feat in last season's Great Lakes Invitational against Michigan Tech. "We were really worried about not having Eric Werner back there tonight," Berenson said. "He's our most dangerous offensive defenseman, and he's a big part of our team. But I thought our defense did a pretty good job without him." Hunwick helped to pick up the slack and made his presence felt on the power play - where Werner may be missed the most. "Coach has been telling the defense to establish our shot on the power play," Hunwick said. "It makes it a lot easier for our forwards because then (our opponent's) penalty killers really have to respect us up high, and it gives our for- wards a lot more room." Hunwick's hat trick was Michigan's second this season. Tambellini netted three goals in Michigan's 5-2 win over Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 5. After the game, Hunwick said he was not sure if his teammates were focusing on getting him his third goal and even claimed that he was consider- ing passing up the shot, but Gajic was not convinced. "He was going to shoot every puck he got," Gajic said right before he turned to Hunwick with a smile on his face.
