The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 7A VIGIL Continued from Page 1A tion of Scenes and Monologues," an original performance by students tonight in East Quad at 7:30 p.m. At "An Evening with Survivors," a Sabbath dinner with Holocaust survivors tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. at Hillel, attendees will get a chance to hear the stories of those who lived through experiences in concentration camps during World War II. One of the more anticipated events is Chris Szpilman's account of his father's life in 1200 Chemistry Building at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Szpilman is the son of Wladyslaw Szpilman whose life was portrayed in last year's movie "The Pianist." "That should be emotional and a very good story so I would encourage everyone to come to that," Frenkel said. Hillel members said they hope the different events will help students understand the plight of Jews during World War II and also help the michigan daily deter another potential Holocaust by raising awareness. "I don't really experience war aside from 9- 11. I don't see the prospects of the Holocaust happening to me or my family or friends in my region anytime soon. I just come to show my support to ensure that it doesn't happen again," Landau said. Frenkel said the events extended to more con- temporary problems of oppression. "As important as it is for people to remember those who died in the Holocaust, it's also important to learn about other people who are now being persecuted, not necessarily in the same way, but just to remind them that stuff like this is still going on," she said. David Binswanger, an LSA senior, said he has participated in the reading of names for the last three years, stopped by the Diag yesterday one last time to honor the memory of Holo- caust victims. "I just hope that it reminds people that this happened and it can't happen again. It's a very grim reminder." PROTESTS Continued from Page 1A Edward Burnett, facilities manager and program center coordinator for the house. Burnett said the house needs significant renovations. "The conference room is in the attic," said one student who regularly visits the house. "Whatever goes on on one floor, you hear on the other floor," she added, detailing the house's state of dilapidation. MESA lacks a coordinator for the Hispanic community, one MESA representative said. Former Latino American coordinator Donney Moroney now works as a counselor for the Medical School. A number of people at the meeting also said that students have lobbied for a Middle Eastern coordinator for years. Representatives from the Native American Student Association said funding has been cut for the University- sponsored Pow Wow, a celebration of Native American cul- ture that draws a national crowd every year. Typically, the Pow Wow is an all-weekend event, but this year there will be no Friday ceremonies, NASA representa- tives said. Vice President of Student Affairs E. Royster Harper has allegedly promised to help raise money. MEDSTART Continued from Page 1A could act this way. It made me want to fight harder," Floyd said. After her mother's death, Murray realized that she was wasting her life and decided to focus her energies. "I felt as if the dam had broken and everything that was hidden came out," she said. She decided to go back to school . After being rejected many times, she finally got admitted into a high school. "Half vision and hard work is what allowed me to come to this point in my life," she said. She applied to Harvard University, and for a New York Times scholarship for students who faced adversity. She won the scholarship, her story was published in the Times and a docu- mentary was made of her experiences. Reflecting upon her life, she said she doesn't feel anger or resentment toward anybody for her rough past. Last year, Child Advocacy Week was expanded to become a weeklong event so that Medstart could convey its missions to a wider audience and get more undergraduates involved, said Katherine Johnson, co-president of tloe organization.
