FEMINISM
Continued from Page 1
"I'm very sensitive of U.S. feminism and how it is
imposed on other countries in (social terms). Generally,
I'm interested in the crossing over of different forms of
feminism between different countries," Hasselbarth said.
Hasselbarth pointed out that the plural word "feminisms" in
the title is ideal because it signifies that there are different
approaches to feminism and that they vary world-wide.
Lal said interviews will be conducted on campus sometime
this semester and that students on campus can come to the tap-
ings either as part of the audience or as questioners.
"There are different things that need to be integrated into
the program. We are looking for ways to integrate under-
graduates into all levels of the project," said Lal.
More information about the project can be found at
www umich.edu/~glblfem.
The event was part of a series of Brown Bag talks spon-
sored by the Institute of Research on Women and Gender.

MARRIAGE
Continued from Page 1
Americans are ready for it.
"You don't change the constitution
to discriminate against people. The
constitution is meant to protect peo-
ple," said Melissa Sue Robinson,
national director of the National
Association for the Advancement of
Transgender People.
"It would really depress me to
know the state I live in did that,"
Robinson added.
But LSA junior Collin McGlashen
said he fears that allowing same-sex
couples to wed would endanger the
sanctity of marriage.
"I don't want to take anything away
from what a same-sex relationship is

and what they share," McGlashen
said. "But what marriage is and how
it has been viewed ... is a sacred
institution between a man and a
woman."
"That should be respected," he added.
Although the original amendment
sought to also prohibit the granting
of domestic partner benefits at pub-
lic universities and local govern-
ments, the language was dropped
before the House vote in a final
effort to attract undecided represen-
tatives.
Michigan is just one of many states
to address same-sex marriage, which
quickly became a divisive national
issue after San Francisco Mayor Gavin
Newsom began performing marriages

for homosexuals three weeks ago.
Since then, more than 3,600 gay cou-
ples have been wed in San Francisco
The San Francisco marriages were
the impetus for other cities to under-
take similar measures. New Paltz,
N.Y. Mayor Jason West was charged
last week with 19 misdemeanors for
officiating 25 weddings for homo-
sexual couples who did not have
licenses.
President Bush announced he sup-
ports a proposal to amend the nation-
al constitution to prohibit gay
marriage on Feb. 27. Only three out
of 15 Michigan members of the U.S.
House of Representatives favor the
amendment, the Detroit Free Press
reported.

DEBATE
Continued from Page 1
revisions," Averitt said, adding that she will e-mail the ques-
tions to all parties.
Galardi said that she did not open the attachment that con-
tained the questions for fear that it would undermine the fair-
ness of the debate. She also said she did not know why
Averitt e-mailed the questions, but said she thought that "the
reason why they had sent them to me was because I
expressed some concern over the questions asked last year."
The presidential candidates reacted with discontent.
"It's illegal according to the (Central Student Judiciary),"
said independent candidate Tim Moore.
"That's obviously not fair," said Kate Stenvig, "Don't they
think that people will find out?"
Mironov, who is also the student general counsel for MSA,
said he has not seen the questions and originally was not aware
that Galardi had received them. Other MSA officers on Stu-
dents First also reportedly were not made aware of the e-mail.
