The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 7 HEALTH Continued from Page 1 To rectify this problem, MHWG suggested including insurance expenses in financial aid calculations, but only if insurance is made a "condition for matricula- tion." MHWG recommended granting insurance for all students. In January, the administration implemented its Health Withdrawal and Readmission Policy and Procedures, a set of procedures and formal rules for withdrawing a mentally disturbed student. "There is now a formal policy by which that student can be brought in, counseled, evaluated and if necessary with- drawn from class, given guidelines as to what kind of help they need to get," Winfield said. Students will have "a pro- scribed, systematic reevaluation when they're ready to come back," he added. The group's report also stresses de-stigmatization. Often times, MHWG contends, students do not seek help because if their fear or shame. The group says this may occur in the international community and or in cer- tain student groups - one professor reviewed issues of stigmatization in the Korean community, for example. The website, along with other public outreach medi- ums - like a recent movie on depression circulated by Rackham School of Graduate Studies - will help com- bat stigmatization, Winfield said. He may also push for a themed semester on mental health. DEAN Continued from Page 1 "We all felt comfortable signing on to (the statement) and thought that because it covered many areas of sci- ence, that it made a compelling case that this was in fact pervasive and unprecedented," she said. Geological sciences Prof. Henry Pol- lack, who also studies climate change, said he was glad to see a faculty mem- ber from the University among the sig- natories. "I'm pleased to see it, ... (Bierbaum) is a great spokesperson for a wide range of science." Pollack said of the statement, "It's been long in coming. How much atten- tion or use the current administration makes of science has been questioned for a long time." The statement and supporting docu- ment list numerous cases of alleged mis- use of science for political gain by the Bush administration. In one example, the Bush administra- tion dismissed several highly qualified scientific experts from an advisory com- mittee on childhood lead poisoning. The dismissal occurred just prior to a meet- ing where the committee planned to dis- cuss tightening lead standards. The experts were replaced by at least two new appointees with financial ties to the lead industry, and by three others who were likely to oppose tougher lead standards, according to the document. "It sure looks like (they're) stacking the deck with people who share (their) ideology," Bierbaum said. In Bierbaum's own field of expertise, the administration pressured the Envi- ronmental Protection Agency to make extensive changes to a report on climate change - including removing scientific graphs on global warming and deleting all references to a National Academy of Sciences report that concluded that human activity influences climate. The EPA eventually decided to drop the section on global warming from the report, "rather than compromising their credibility by misrepresenting the scien- tific consensus," according to the UCS document. Bierbaum said she found it frustrating trying to communicate scientific infor- mation to the administration. "During that time it was quite clear what they thought of climate science - that is, very little. They simply didn't want to hear my views." Yet for Bierbaum, the problems span far more than just climate science. She was especially concerned, she said, about health issues ignored or misrepre- sented by the Bush administration. For instance, the administration placed state- ments on the Health and Human Ser- vices website claiming condoms do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases and that breast cancer is linked to abor- tion, she said. "Both of these (statements) have no founding, as the health community tells me, in science," Bierbaum said. "Yet I would argue could actually harm humans who read that and assume these 'facts' are true." Bierbaum said she believes policy should be based both on what is politi- cally and scientifically feasible, but that scientific facts should not be distorted. "I think free and open exchange of information and informed debate about real data is the best way to move the country forward." DEATH ROW Continued from Page 1 fact, use art as a way to stay sane," Ellsworth said. She continued by commenting on the psychological impact of prison. "There are things he will never be able to do," Ellsworth said. Joe Lake, a Law School student who organized the event,: said he opposes the death penalty. "Many people don't under- stand the implications that the death penalty has on real peo- ple," Lake said. "The punishment goes beyond what people: understand." He also felt Ellsworth's lecture tried to emphasize that point When asked about the significance of the PCAP events, Lake said, "Putting a human face on the prison system is a major goal of PCAP." An October 2003 Gallup Poll reported that more than half of citizens in the United States support the death penalty, and when those polled were given the option of the death penalty and life without parole, 53 percent still supported it. Law student Omario Kanji attended the lecture for several reasons. "I wanted to hear how someone escapes the death penalty and I wanted to see what role Professor Ellsworth; had and why she cared," Kanji said. Although Kanji supports, the death penalty, he said he admired the way Ellsworth assisted Carriger. Even if they are guilty ... I think they still: deserve dignity while they're around," Kanji said. PCAP-sponsored events will continue throughout the week, ending March 16. the michigan daily To be the first to live in The highly sought after I ISSA PROPERTIES - I&2 Bedroom Apts. -Furnished -Excellent Campus Locations *Parking Reputable Management Now Leasing for May 2004 and Sept. 2004 CENTRAL CAMPUS 2 &3 bdrm Apartment Homes Beautifully Furnished Outstanding views Garage parking Central air 9 foot high ceilings Brand new construction Premier 341 E.
