The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 4, 2004 - 7A VIETNAM SPY Continued from Page 1A must support their government and deal with problems in a democratic manner. Lillie, himself a Vietnam veteran, said he was disappoint- ed that more students did not show up, the audience consist- ed mostly of veterans. He attributed the low attendance to complications with advertising the event, but hopes that more will come to the next two presentations.: Citing a desire for the objective study of history, Lillie said he wanted to introduce students to a less publicized but equally important part of the Vietnam War - people with such unique experiences as Krall's. Lillie's interest in Vietnam began after defeating a bout of alcoholism. "It was very hard living in Ann Arbor as a Vietnam veter- an," he said. "I was one of those that went into the closet about being a Vietnam vet and I took a fifth of whiskey with me. When I cleaned up in June, 1999, I decided I would learn about what I had lived through, and I became a student of the war." LSA freshman Meredith Jones said she heard about the event in her History of the Vietnam War class, and that she thought it was valuable to hear a first person account of the Vietnam War. "You don't hear many people from that situation who come up and say you shouldn't badmouth your govern- ment," she said. The next two events take place in the Kellogg Auditori- um in the School of Dentistry Building March 10 and March 17 at 2:00 p.m. The March 10 program will include a panel discussion of Vietnam veterans. Michael Benge, an activist on behalf of the Montagnard people - a native Vietnamese people forced to resettle in 1957 by the South Vietnamese government - will speak on March 17. - Daily Staff ReporterAndrew McCormack contributed to this report. MARRIAGE Continued from Page 1A Also on Friday, the Social Security Administration decided not to accept any marriage licenses from San Fran- cisco until the issue is resolved. In recent years, states, given the right to deny standard marriage bene- fits to gay couples by DOMA have created their own laws opposing same-sex marriage. If Ohio enacts its pending Defense of Marriage act, it will be the 38th state - including Michigan - to have such laws in opposition to gay marriage. Tekla Bude, College Republican member-at-large, said that while gay marriage conflicts with her reli- gious views, she thinks the govern- ment should recognize marriage in terms of civil unions and benefits. LSA freshman Rachel Nagrant said she thinks the proposal is political. "I think the (issue) is too contro- versial. Bush is trying to keep his conservative supporters with him. I think this was probably a good move because he already has an advantage and by taking a strong political stance he's keeping his former supporters," Nagrant said. Kinesiology sophomore Steve Sargol, disagreed with this notion, saying he does not believe Bush is using the proposal as a campaign hoist. "I don't think this (proposal) could do anything but hurt his campaign, because I think there would be more people against it and to take such a strong stance on such a sensitive issue could really hurt him," Sargol said. Sargol added that he thinks since a marriage is like a contract, the gov- ernment should have a say in it. Public opinion suggests the major- ity of Americans oppose gay mar- riage; a CNN/USA Today Gallup Poll conducted on Feb. 16-17 showed 64 percent believe gay marriages should not be recognized by law. However, in an ABC News/Wash- ington Post poll, only 45 percent said they would support an amend- ment making gay marriages illegal in the U.S. * Broadview Apartments " Spacious 1 bedroom apartments " Spacious 2 bedrooms with master bath " Shuttle around campus * Large private balconies with wooded views " Pets welcome -741-9300 I (EXTENDEDHOURS) www.annarborapartments.net AVAILABLE FALL 2004 - 3-6Bedroom Houses: 810 Arch; 1319 Forest Ct 1700 S.
