CAUCUSES
Continued from Page 1
2000 election season. Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the
Democratic National Committee, said before the Iowa
Democratic caucuses last month that he hopes to know the
party's nominee by early March. In addition, Internet voting
has been open
Typically, a candidate who obtains a specified portion
of delegates nationwide walks away with the committee's
endorsement long before the official nomination, which
comes in July this year. The party's nominee this year will
need to secure 2,161 out of more than 4,000 possible del-
egates to win the nomination.
Besides a cursory primary schedule, campaign offi-
cials said the media has skewed the race, often seeking to
topple frontrunners. Intense press coverage is hardly a
new phenomenon of presidential races; however, cam-
paign officials said this year's media barrage has focused
too little on candidates' platforms and given undue cre-
dence to opinion polls.
"I'm not going to blame the media - people are making
up their own minds - but I don't think there has been as
in-depth of coverage as some people may have liked," said
Jonathan Beeton, Clark's Michigan spokesman.
"It's pretty hard to defend yourself against every media
organization in the country," Dean told reporters yesterday
after the rally, referring to what he believes to be inaccurate
reports about his candidacy.

SEWAGE
Continued from Page 1
minutes, while they continued to serve sandwiches to cus-
tomers.
"There was no controversy, we went by what OSEH said.
We told them the situation, and since it was not a danger to
anyone we postponed the (preparation of) product, but never
closed the store," Bell said.
But Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman Diane
Brown said that OSEH understood the Earl of Sandwich
situation to be a small sewage backup, one that required
disinfectant and cleaning of the area, but not necessarily a
closure.
"If there is a (small) sewage backup, close the food area
and fix what is creating the problem. ... Then look to keep
it open," Brown said.
But. she added that if indeed there was a serious sewage
backup, the procedure might involve closing the entire store.
Another anonymous Earl of Sandwich employee said that
this is not the first time the University has not closed a din-
ing place when there was a health hazard.
"Last year there was a sewage backup (at Detour Deli).
They made us stay open even though we didn't have any
water," he said. Detour Deli is also located at Pierpont
Commons.
Brown said that OSEH is checking up on Earl of Sand-
wich today to make sure it meets all health precautions and
went through proper health procedures yesterday.

ABORTION
Continued from Page 1
wants to save women from the same
fate.
Alma Wheeler Smith, a Michigan
alum who served in the State Senate,
expressed her doubt over the Bush
administration's promotion of absti-
nence as safe sex.
"Abstinence is okay, but the
teenagers I have talked to say absti-
nence just doesn't fly." Stressing the
hardship that women face, Smith
added, "In the state of Michigan there
are very few clinics that offer abortion
services."
Following Smith was Dr. Laszlo
Sogor, Medical Director of Planned
Parenthood in Cleveland, doctor of
obstetrics and gynecology and profes-
sor at Case Western Reserve Universi-
ty. Sogor stated the importance of
autonomy, the right for people to make
their own decisions, especially in
health care.
"Nobody else can judge for you ...
Abortion and contraceptive services
are ethical."

Student reactions to the speakers
varied dramatically. LSA sophomore
Rebecca Mark was receptive to the
political message the speakers con-
veyed.
"It's going to be so important in the
next election for women to understand
certain groups are trying to take away
their rights for choice," she said.
An opposing view came from
Louise Conlon, LSA senior and presi-
dent of Students for Life. "In contrast
to Students for Choice, we feel that
every life is valuable: the life of the
woman, the life of the child; they're
equally valuable. One does not have
precedence over the other," Conlon
said.
Although the state of Michigan cur-
rently has no anti-choice or pro-choice
legislation, Smith emphasized the need
for youth to participate in all aspects of
their government.
"We have seen the Bush Administra-
tion take off on many policies states
have begun and make them very real
on a federal level...If half of the 18-35
year olds voted, you would knock our
socks off."
