S the michigan daily SAPAC Continued from Page 1A ly be implemented this upcoming year. "We tried out different ideas with smaller groups to see what worked and what didn't," SAPAC Director Kelly Cichy said. Through the pilot program, SAPAC was able to distinguish what avenues would fully accomplish the final goals of the University. The first of these goals is that SAPAC will connect and interact with every first-year student during fall term. "We're trying to figure out how to reach the largest number of students in the best way possi- ble," said Melissa Tumas, education and training coordinator for SAPAC. Another goal is to ensure that all students are provided with basic safety information and are aware of all the campus resources. Eventually, the University and SAPAC hope to "ultimately create and maintain a campus climate and community that is a safe and comfortable place for all students, staffand faculty,"Cichy said. In order to accomplish its agenda, SAPAC has set up a program that executes "multiple points of contact," meaning they will utilize a course that continually addresses the issue until a long-term impact is made. "We're hoping by utilizing multiple levels of interaction, we will reach more students," Tumas said. "We want to make it clear that sexual assault is not acceptable on this campus." The Residence Hall Repertory Theater's presen- tation at new student orientation this summer will be the first time an incoming student encounters part of SAPAC's program. The Res Rep troupe puts on original performances dealing with contempo- rary social and personal themes, one of which is acquaintance rape - a rape perpetrated by some- one known to their victim. Since 98 percent of entering freshmen live in res- idence halls, SAPAC plans on utilizing hall meet- ings and workshops to advertise their message, Cichy said. "At the first floor meeting, the (resident advisor) will present basic information in handouts and pamphlets about alcohol, consent and coercion, and how to help a friend in need," Cichy said. Other ideas still in the evaluation stage include hosting workshops and additional per- formances by the Talk To Us theater troupe, a group that performs on topics such as sexism and diversity, as well as interpersonal and social issues. TTU's performances would be similar to Res Rep's, except they would be far more extensive and continue throughout the school year. "We've been working with the theater troupe to deliver the concept of 'edu- tainment' in a way that interactive and inter- esting," Tumas said. HARPER Continued from Page 1A kind of student, I think RHA ... represents a particular kind of student;' she said. "I don't kid myself that what students are thinking and what they want, I know." In particular, Harper said she finds difficulty in getting to know students that are on financial aid or have to work to pay their tuition. "Most of us don't know very much about the student that's working thirty or forty hours a week, other than the fact that they are working thirty or forty hours a week, and this place is different for them," she said. "You really can't be active here if you need to work. It is hard to be engaged in an institution if you need to work" Harper added that the unfortunate consequence of this is that it tends to bias the student perspective she gets. "It's difficult to even be in a leadership role here if you are on financial aid or need to work, so really all of us are hear- ing from a more privileged set of students," she said. Harper has been working at the University for over twenty years and formerly served as the dean of students. Do NOT FORGET T YIB 42 MAYNARD ST.
