Everything they say about the Patri- ots is true. They haven't lost since the fourth week of the season, Tom Brady is a stud, and, yes, Bill Belichick's defenses are as good as everyone says they are. The Patriots are the real deal. But I have seen this all before. Brad Johnson beat Rich Gannon last year when everyone thought that the experi- ence of the Raiders would prevail. The year before that, it was Tom Brady's Patriots upsetting the Rams and their juggernaut offense. In 2000, the Ravens were led to a Super Bowl title by whom? Trent Dilfer? I refuse to be duped once again by this game. Carolina is no slouch. This team is led by one of the best running backs in the country, Stephen Davis. He ran for over 1400 yards this season while bat- tling injury. He is the type of running back that wants the ball every down and will run 50 times each game if that is what it takes to win. Davis averaged 106.7 yards per game, fourth in the NFL, and he rarely turns the ball over. In order to stop the Panthers New Eng- land has to put eight guys in the box. Carolina coach John Fox will run the ball on first and 10 or third and eight, so the Patriots might as well just keep their nickel-and-dime packages on the sideline. Jake Delhomme is no Tom Brady. He doesn't have the experience or the legs. But he does have a great arm, and he makes smart decisions. He may not be a superstar yet, but he is certainly good enough to get the ball to Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad in sin- gle coverage. But that's the way the Panthers are built. They are the Patriots of two years ago: No one knows who they are, and they are the underdogs every week, but they keep winning. Jake Delhomme's quarterback rating actually improves, from 71.4 to 97.3, when his team is behind. This team is the definition of clutch. Delhomme has led the Panthers on game-winning drives in the last two minutes of regulation or in overtime eight times this season, including a double overtime score from Del- homme to Smith to beat the Rams in St. Louis. Fox has given this team a purpose. A team that was 1-15 two seasons ago is now the pride of the NFC. They go into each game expecting to win. In week two of the season, the Pan- thers took on the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Bucca- neers. It was a team that looked even better in a week-one slaughtering of Philadelphia than they did in the Super Bowl the year before. The Panthers didn't care. They blocked three kicks, ran the ball for 130 yards, and beat the Bucs 12-9. That was the defining moment for this team. They estab- lished themselves as the team to beat in the NFC, and they showed the foot- ball world which team really has the best defense in the NFL. The standard for defenses in the NFL of late has been the Buccaneers. But the Panthers' front four are stronger and faster. Julius Peppers, constantly fighting double teams, had only seven sacks this season (down from his 12 last season). The other three took advantage and combined for 17 sacks between them. They get to the quarterback without needing the help of the safeties. So, let the wild rumpus start and watch as the underdog Panthers sur- prise everyone once again. ..... . ............ . ............. ................ . ............... . by Erie Chan Brady has been to the big game Daily Arts Write ratr asd beewt o own h way he drove the Patriots down the This is like David and.Goliath field in 2002 to set up a last see- minus the sling.
