said they also called him names. "At
first I was confused. After it had settled
in, Iwas upset,"he said.
"That only happened once. In seven
years as a student, I never experienced it
after that."
Altamirano said that the internation-
al center serves as an advocate for
international students who experience
harassment. He said the center can pro-
vide help such as getting students in
contact with the appropriate law
enforcement.
"We want to make sure the student
feels supported by us ... so the student
will not feel alone," he said. Such
phone calls "can be a problem if it's
not a prank call."
DPS continues to urge anyone receiv-
ing a phone call like those in the crime
alert to call DPS at 763-1131.

too, but lives are saved," Fort said. "I
think celebrating these accomplish-
ments is very important."
LSA junior Dave Lapedis attended
the event because he said he believes it
is important for organizations to be
involved in these issues and focus on
more than just money. Lapedis, an
organizational studies concentrator,
said Ford's program is good, but
"they're motivated for business rea-
sons, and I would have liked to see
more for the good of the community."
Stone further acknowledged that
there is still much work to be done on
the issue, adding that the efforts thus
far are not "anything special." He
explained further plans to help the
impending crisis in India and China,
where 7.2 million people currently

have AIDS.
Ford also helped improve benefits to
employees with HIV/AIDS, and since
2000, HIV/AIDS benefits have been
standard in employee's health care
packages.
"We need to treat HIV/AIDS in
health coverage no differently than
any other life-threatening illness,"
Stone said. "It was shocking for me to
learn that some plans specifically
excluded AIDS."
The program's efforts focus on
encouraging employees to get tested
and seek treatment, all of which is
kept strictly confidential. Still, some
employees refuse testing out of fear
that their employers will receive the
results. Stone stressed that Ford does
not know these test results, and there-
fore, this makes the process of quanti-
fying the program's success is
difficult.

extent of HIV in our workforce - that
is kept confidential," he said. There is
"soft data," Stone added, which indi-
cates that "there is an increased level of
knowledge, and people are much more
open and willing to discuss (AIDS)."
Peer educators are the "key to suc-
cess," in the program, Stone said. There
are currently 77 trained employees bal-
anced between two plants in Silverton
and Port Elizabeth, who informally
educate their fellow employees and
neighbors about safe sex practices and
HIV/AIDS treatment.
Ford also hopes to extend the bene-
fits beyond its employees by including

sentations about the disease - and out-
reach in churches and other community
organizations.
Stone's presentation was sponsored
by the Global Corporation for Human
Well-Being and the University's Net
Impact, a group for MBA students
interested in corporate responsibility.
The Award for Corporate Excellence,
initiated by Madeleine Albright when
she was secretary of state, is given to
U.S. corporations who work outside the
country in areas of labor, human rights
and environmental standards.
