The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 5, 2003 - 7 Go, rat, go! AWARD Continued from Page 1 awesome professor, advisor and listener who is honest and sincere with every student," said one student nomination. "Over the last two years, Prof. Lassiter has opened up doors for me that I never knew existed. His class has encouraged me to pur- sue a career path in urban planning that I would not have considered if not for his enthusiasm and devotion," said another. Lassiter, who came to the University after teaching for just two years at a small liberal arts college in Maine, said he was grateful for the award and what it meant. "I wouldn't try to say that I'm a better teacher than anyone else. I think there are a lot of great teachers here, and it's a faculty that really balances teaching and researching really well," Lassiter said. "Small colleges emphasize teaching as a top priority, so there is a culture there of you're in your office all the time and going to lunch with students, and it's difficult at a place like the University, but my sense is that students can make this a small university if they want to. ... I've gone to lunch with some students when they've invited me and I love doing that," he added. He said seeing the enthusiasm one of his own college professors had for academia is what drew him into becoming a professor. "There is something on a college campuses where is always a high level of energy," he said. "I find that to be the best part of teaching at the University, there is constantly a new group of young, excited, intellectually engaged students. "The poignant part of that is that students move on and you stay here." He also said he believes his subject matter - recent American history - helps him to reach his students. "History courses have to be engaged in the world we live in now... we have to under- stand the world now through the lens of the past. The classes that I teach are about the present as much as the past," he said. Lassiter added that one of the things he tries most to do is break up his lectures with engaging videos and films. A typical lecture, he said, uses six to eight film clips at two or three minutes each. "I give hour-and-20 minute lectures, and nobody wants to listen to someone talk for an hour and twenty minutes," he said. "(Using clips) really draws points home in a way that talking about it, I don't think, does." AP PHOTO Sammie Jurgens, trainer of Zeta, an albino laboratory rat, cheers yesterday as her charge competes in the tight rope event at a competition at Nebraska Wesleyan University. FEMALES Continued from Page 1 the black middle class is a proba- ble cause of the increased female enrollment. "People are just get- ting aware of the trend and there is a two-year lag in publication," Eccles said, referring to the lack of conclusive reasons for the increased enrollment of women. "It's real speculative now" Eccles said measures taken in the past to boost the number of women in higher education may partly explain today's trend. Engineering freshmen Karina Fochtman attributes the current numbers to increased motivation among women. "Girls are getting more interested in being educated and want to be more independ- ent," she said. "They also work harder and have better applica- tions which lead to more of them getting accepted." Having more women than men in classes adds more to courses, LSA junior David Pechersky said. "I'd rather have more girls in my classes because they like to talk more," he said. "But I'd have to be more sensitive about what I say." Even as more women enroll in college, some students feel they will be unaffected by the rise. "There is no effect on the engineering especially," Engi- neering sophomore Fernando Cheng said about the higher enrollment of men in the Engi- neering School. RELIGION Continued from Page 1 involved," Senger said. In addition to religious views on homosexu- ality, premarital sex was also discussed exten- sively, although only one of the panelists expressed strong disapproval. "Sexuality is restricted to marriage. It is con- sidered sacred, never depreciated, and (within the confines of marriage) considered natural, healthy and useful for spiritual benefits," Bilici said. Bilici went on to say that Islam actually celebrates sexuality in marriage and talks about it explicitly, with actual books of Islamic erotica suggesting various sexual positions for married couples to try. Stevens echoed his comments that premarital sex is wrong, saying that in Christianity mar- riage is a protective institution in which sex can be expressed. But the importance of confining sex to mar- ried couples was not as highly stressed in com- ments from Dworsky and Senger. Dworsky said in Judaism, the sexual urge is important and should be cultured and elevated. However, she never made any direct reference to the importance of sex within the framework of marriage. "The energy inherent in something like sex drive can be supplemented into an energy of rich love and mutual self-perfection," said Sen- ger in reference to Buddhism. "There is no sex license. Morality is relative; we teach basic uni- versal truths. There is less emphasis on moral codes, because they vary between societies," he added. Liana Reading, a former Christian Science believer who converted to Islam, said after the event the only speaker to answer the questions directly was the Muslim representative. "All the other panelists totally avoided the issue," LSA senior Reading said. She specifically criticized the Christian Sci- ence speaker for not taking a stronger stance on homosexuality. Reading said Christian Science does not condone homosexual practices. But Deline said he was happy with the out- come of the event. "Originally our plan was to expose people to other religions," besides his own religion, Christian Science, he said. He added that he was glad to see that people are thinking about spiritual issues. the michigan daily Need $200 Dollars???
