Students protest Bhopal chemical spill

BHOPA L
Continued from Page 1A
that 16 campuses around the world were
involved in the demonstrations in
remembrance of the Bhopal tragedy.
"Our goal is to put as much pressure
on Dow as possible. (On May 12), we
went to shareholders to meet at Dow
headquarters to let them know why
Dow should help out. It was just anoth-
er action to add pressure on Dow,"
Patel said.
Bora added that the corporate
responsibility of Dow is to clean up
Bhopal's contaminated water and soil.
But Musser said the company would
not take responsibility for the actions of
Union Carbide in Bhopal.
"The facts are Dow is not involved in
any aspect of (the chemical spill).

When we purchased shares of Union
Carbide, we purchased the company
without responsibility for claims or
cleaning. The resolution for the claims
were taken care of by the Indian gov-
ernment in 1989," Musser said.
Still, Bora said that in addition to the
civil trial that led to a settlement
between Union Carbide and the Indian
government in court, criminal charges
against the company remain that Union
Carbide failed to settle.
"Dow was not named in the criminal
lawsuit. Union Carbide and Mr. (War-
ren) Anderson, the former CEO, are
named in it. They have not come for-
ward. Their position on the matter is
that the Indian government has no
jurisdiction over Union Carbide or Mr.
Ander n; therefore, they are not
appearing in court," Musser added.

In response to the claims of contami-
nated water, Musser said the company
has not tested the water in Bhopal, but
the Indian government tested it and
found nothing wrong with it.
Musser added that the demonstration
shown by the students is unlikely to
change Dow's perception of its respon-
sibility for the situation.
"I don't think that in any likelihood
we'll change our opinion. We've held
our opinion for two years, and there is
no likelihood it'll change," Musser said.
Still, Patel said that he believes there
is merit ie the demonstration because it
is shedding public light onto the
tragedy of Bhopal.
"Public image is everything to com-
panies like Dow. If there are enough
people against it, they will have to
clean up;' Patel said.

develops computing technologies for
the University. With Internet2, how-
ever, Adamson saw the increased
benefit.
"There is a lot of empty net, and
there's not a lot of competition," he said.
With applications ranging from
American astrologists using the Gemi-
ni telescope located in Hawaii and
Chile, to a Music School alum in
Miami writing symphonies with an
old professor over video, Internet2 has
broad implications.
It provides "the ability to be able to
study the data at all times, to be able
to respond quickly," said Corbato.
Corbato also said that there is lit-
tle chance Internet2 will become
commercial, as the Internet has
been since the mid-90s. Its value

Colleen McGowan normally walks
with her daughter along a gravel path
to the edge of school property. But yes-
terday, she walked the second-grader
into the school building. "I told her I'd
be picking her up and taking her every
day," McGowan said.
McGowan, 30, said she thought it
was important for her seven-year-old
daughter, Savannah, to be in school
despite the danger. "You can't keep
them home and keep them from their
education," she said.
"I ain't a bit scared. If you're going
to get killed, you're going to get it,"
said J.J. Stamper, 76, as he drank cof-
fee at a McDonald's nearby.
But Yvonne Marcello, 47, said she is
almost paralyzed with fear when she
thinks about the shootings and crime in
general in her neighborhood.
"I don't go out very often. I should-

to walk everywhere.
Yesterday, only about half of the
tables were occupied at China City
restaurant less than a mile from I-270.
"We were busier before the shoot-
ings," said manager Jeffrey Zhu.'"'I
asked a lot of customers. They usually
drive this way, but not anymore."' ''
As he left the slower-than-usual Los'
Camperos Mexican restaurant next
door, Bob LaGore, 45, said he, too,;i

their own lives on the line," Kelley said.
Although polls have shown the nation is divid-
ed on the Iraq war, Jordan and Mesko said they
believe the country has been supportive of its
troops. "Overall, the American public values the
troops, and supports the troops regardless of
whether or not they support the war, much more
so than they did in Vietnam, which is really
excellent;' Mesko said.
Jordan said in Altus most local businesses
offer military discounts. "Walking around in uni-

form, you get a lot of respect;' he said.
Since both Jordan and Mesko are in the mili-
tary, they declined to comment on the politics of
the war, but said military men and women are
actively engaged in discussions about the war
behind closed doors.
One policy shift that may affect the military
is the President's National Security Strategy,
released in Sept. 2002, which outlines the case
for taking pre-emptive action against other
nations. "As Jermaine Jordan, I think about
this, but as Lieutenant Jordan, it's not my place
to criticize. It is my place as a citizen to under-
stand and gather information and be as

informed as possible, but who I am and what I
think has to be separate from what my job dic-
tates," Jordan said.
But Kelley said he is concerned about the pub-
lication of the pre-emption doctrine. "To
announce to the world that pre-emptive action is
from now on the military policy of the United
States is counter-productive, because it fosters an
image of the United States throughout the world
as being unreliable and unpredictable, asserting
the right to attack any nation at almost any time;'
Kelley said.
Earlier this year, the Bush administration
accused the media of not covering the positive

developments and progress in Iraq. Mesko and
Jordan, however, didn't think the media was
being unfair.
"The media will report what will bring the
most viewers or readers. What is more juicy or
compelling - a Chinook helicopter going down
and 20 soldiers dying or an Air Force unit telling
all their people back home to have a clothes or
toys drive? I don't think its unfair, it's their job,"
Jordan said.
Mesko felt that the negative stories coming out
of Iraq were due, in part, to the fact that the war
was not going as well as had been predicted.
"Media coverage of the high casualty count isn't

the media being hard on the administration,..as,
much as it is the media covering the story that
things are going much worse than we expectki
them to. Back in March, the military expected us
to have fewer troops in Iraq this fall than we achy,
ally have there right now" "
Despite the controversies over the war, Mee
and Jordan said the troops they knew who af
serving in Iraq understand why they are there d
what the purpose of their mission is. "The p6k"'
tics are in Washington," Jordan said. "The men-
tality in the military is, let's get this job done as
quickly as possible, let's get it done right and then
let's get on home."
