A rookie to the game, Carpenter was picked on a lot, but proved extremely effective as a cover corner. Carpenter A By Ryan Sosin Daily Sports Writer Halloween day at Mary Sue Cole- man's house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. All of that changed when the Bocce ball club showed up on her doorstep. Sad to find that the Michi- gan president and honorary club mem- ber could not come out to play, the club left a nice letter and a bag of goodies on her doorstep before playing a game of bocce ball on her lawn. "This (was) the finest event of the year at this university or any other uni- versity," senior Ben Goldman said. This game of bocce on the president's lawn was hardly Halloween hijinx, but more of the norm for the two year-old club which has played all over the cam- pus. They play in hallways and on the Diag, in snow and rain and even at spe- cial events like Coleman's inauguration. "We get together when we all want to play bocce, and it usually results in some wackiness," Junior Dan Mullkoff said. Bocce ball is a sweet marriage between lawn darts and curling, despite the fact it predates both. The club is divided into teams: The Sweeticles with the green balls and the Bootylicious with the red. The goal of the game is to get your teams four balls as close to the target, called the pallina, as possible. The team closest to the pallina gets a point for each ball they have closer than their opponents. The game is over once a team has 12 points. "I'm always on Sweeticles!" sopho- more Christina Deangelo said. If you can sing Italian like Pavarotti or can pretend to speak Italian like Kramer, the Bocce ball club is for you. The club's two resident Italian speakers, Deangelo and sophomore Abby Zaija, will have you yelling "Che cazzo!" at your bad shots in no time. "It's a novelty," junior Liz Bair said. "You get to yell stuff and play a sport without working up a sweat." The club can be slightly allusive, packing up in a small bag that weighs around 30 lbs and heading off for its next adventure. But should you hap- pen to find the Bocce ball club, you will be greeted with a "Che bella!" and thrown right into the fire known as bocce ball. M SCHEDULE in convincing fasion Tuesday, Nov. 4 W Basketball vs. Athletes in Action, 7 p.m. DETROIT (AP) - Charles Woodson was embarrassed to lose to the Detroit Lions. Then, the star cornerback said Oakland coach Bill Callahan has lost his team. "It's no secret at this point," Woodson said. Jason Hanson, who kicked three field goals yesterday in Detroit's 23-13 win against Oakland, did not take offense to Woodson's comments. "We're not very good," Hanson said. "Our record isn't good and we're play- ing a lot of backups. They've got a lot of players and they were just in the Super Bowl. People are going to say it's embarrassing to lose to us until we start putting some wins together." The Lions (2-6) had lost six straight and 14 of 15 dating back to last season. "I'm not going to lie, it's been diffi- cult,"' said Joey Harrington, who was 13-of-21 for 117 yards with a TD and an interception. Detroit turned two turnovers into 10 first-quarter points, and scored 13 more on its first three second-half possessions. Oakland (2-6) has lost four straight and looks nothing like the team that lost to Tampa Bay in last season's Super Bowl. The Raiders are off to their worst start since 1964, when they were 1-7-1. Does Callahan think he still has the team? "No question, I'm very confident," Callahan said. Raiders quarterback Marques Tuia- sosopo, in his first NFL start in place of 2002 league MVP Rich Gannon, was sidelined with a left knee injury late in the first half. Rick Mirer made his first appearance since playing one game for San Francisco three years ago. Tuiasosopo was 6-of-11 for 65 yards, with an interception on his second pass. He walked out of the training room awkwardly with a brace covering much of his left leg. "We did an X-ray and it's at least a sprained ligament," Tuiasosopo said.
