The Michigan Daily - New Student Edition - Fall 2003 - 5D 10 records t By Scott Sedia Daily Arts Editor We can only hope this reaches you in time, kids. Before you pack. Before move- in day. Before the entire dorm sees you unload that box of Smash Mouth and Reba McEntire CDs, before you hang that washed-out O-town poster above the bunk beds, before you ask the DJ at that first house party to put on some Air Supply. This is college damn it, and long past time you found some decent tunes. Cam- puses have long been havens for independ- ent, cutting-edge music and you owe it to yourselves to catch up before it's too late and you find yourself haplessly trying to explain to your own kids what you ever saw in Saliva. You deserve better than the trite slop Top 40 radio and MTV have been force feeding ya'. So start hitting up Ann Arbor's famous used record stores, start listening to stu- dent radio, start going to little shows in small dirty places where only 15 people come. Start caring. Here are 10 lesser heard, field-tested dorm room classics to help you jump start your new found taste. A present from your wiser, older brothers at Daily Arts. "Look under your bed. It'll set you free." One day you will be cool indeed. o save you Big Star - #1 Record / Radio City (1972 / 1974) One of the greatest two-for- one deals ever repackaged for CD, here we have the first two albums by Memphis' brilliant but chronically unlucky power- pop shoulda-been superstars. R.E.M., the Replacements and Jack White made careers of ripping Alex Chilton off, and "Thirteen" and "September Gurls" are the perfect soundtrack to everybody's post- adolescence. Pixies - Doolittle (1989) Cliche Alert! Cobain listened to this band! His songs sound like Black Francis'! These Boston noise junkies polished their often-copied soft-loud dynamics and screamed like crazy about Salvador Dali movies and monkeys ascending to heaven. Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (1991) You should seriously con- sider writing your thesis on this flawless blend of finely aged bebop samples and forward thinking rhymes. Mr. Busta steals the show on closer "Scenario" when he growls like "a dungeon dragon." Husker Dii - New Day Rising (1985) Hardcore punk's finest moment is strange- ly also its popiest. Dueling songwriters Grant Hart and Bob Mould remember the Ramones' love of '60s bubblegum as much as their raw metallic crunch. U.N.K.L.E. - Psyence Fiction (1999) rom Creed Thom Yorke, Mike D, Badly Drawn Boy and Richard Ashcroft all guest on this spacey trip-hop masterpiece from DJ Shadow and Mo' Wax's James Lavelle. This experimental pop culture blender pures the best parts of hip-hop, electroni- ca and Britpop into one delicious and nutritious listen. Elvis Costello and the Attractions - This Year's Model (1978) Costello plays his angry, heartbroken nerd persona to the hilt through classics like "No Action" and "Radio, Radio," while the fresh-off- the-road Attractions miraculously gel into a dangerously tight band capable of doing EC's bitter epics justice. Handsome Boy Modeling School - So...How's Your Girl? (1999) The two giants of hip-hop production, Prince Paul (De La Soul) and Dan the Automa- tor (Gorillaz) combine forces to create a jaw-dropping set of sonic ground break- ing, genre-jumping tracks. By turns hilarious, insightful and sexy; brilliant throughout. The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic (1995) The height of this Okla- homa band's crazed Neo-Psychedelia guitar period. Beneath the squall of trip- py noise, eccentric production and goofy song titles ("Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles") lies an oddly Courtesy o, So good it should have been mine. comforting slice of unpredictable humanity and vision. Sleater-Kinney - Call the Doctor (1996) This Northwest punk trio defined and then obliterated the 'riot grrrl' label with their sophomore release. Feminist tirades are braced by undeniably excit- ing and powerful rock 'n' roll. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight (2002) One of last year's best, these Texas indie kings finally get over the death of alt- rock and being dropped by Elektra. Dirty organs, dense word play and smiles abound. FIVE COOL NEW BANDS TO NAME DROP 5.) the Shins 4.) Elec- tric 6 3.) the Sights 2.) Stratford 4 1.) the Libertines.
