But Massie said the University made it impossible for Johnson to stay in school by retaining Calabria for the winter 1998 semester and refusing to let her switch orchestras. NEW BILLS Continued from Page 1A also suggested that the advertisements will eventually act as a cost-reducing strategy for the United States Mint if people are less wary of using the new money. "The Mint doesn't want people not using bills. It is expensive for the Mint to make currency that people don't use because they think it is odd," Brown said. After almost a week in circulation, merchants and con- sumers are beginning to see the bill pass through local stores. The bill "has been pretty well-publicized. Anyone who is confused is probably so ignorant that they shouldn't be handling it anyway," said Starbucks employee Dylan Strzynski, who has accepted the new bill from customers. But, because the bill has only been released for more than a week, and there are a limited number in circulation, many stores have yet to accept the bills from customers. "I haven't even seen any. I'm curious and excited to see them," Amer's Delicatessen employee Ian Rowlette said. Some students like LSA senior Erin Nolan have also seen the new notes. "I thought it was Canadian when I first saw it. I don't understand the point of advertising money. It's not like people go to a store and pick out the bill they'll use," sai Nolan, a waitress at Max and Erma's. "Given the advances in digital printers and copiers, we expect to update the currency with new designs every seven to 10 years in order to stay ahead of these technologies and stay ahead of would-be counterfeiters that are using these technolo- gies," Haley said. Updated $50 and $100 dollar bills are scheduled to be released in 2004 and 2005, and all bills will feature different colors. dant made only a patently inadequate intervention with Calabria himself: He was threatened with a letter of reprimand that was never written," Massie wrote in a brief, responding to the University's appeal. The defen- dant she referred to was former Music School Dean Paul Boylan. The appeal hearing will be held in front of a three-judge panel next year. Currently, 20 out of the 28 judges on the court are appointees of former Republi- can Gov. John Engler. But Massie said she remains unconcerned in spite of the court's conservative nature. GHETTOPOLY Continued from Page 1A images and activities." Currently members of the BSU and NAACP hope to work together to bring further attention to the game and possi- bly start a student boycott of the store. Johnson said the game is meant to be taken lightly but is part of the larger problem of minorities being negatively portrayed in the media. "I am African-American, and my life is not a game," Johnson said. "I'm think- ing about people playing this game andj then the next day going to class, are they going to look at me and think I grew up in a crack house?" SWE WANT YOU. COME WRITE FOR. THE DAILY. To invoke a warfare analogy, we'll hit the target with a lot of collateral damage," Mosberg said. "One part (of the research) is related to a field called pharmacogenomics. It recognizes that there is a genetic underpinning to different diseases and a difference to how people respond to drugs. We can tailor effective therapeu- tic treatments to various populations, so it's not one size fits all," he added. Creating tailor-made drugs is a rela- tively new concept in pharmaceutical research, which has grown only within the last two or three years, said Ham- mond, who is also a representative on the Pharmacy Student Government Council. Graduate students have had limited exposure to the topic, but lectures and electives on pharmacogenomics are available if not scarce. Pharmaceutical sciences Prof. Gus Rosania said his research will con- tribute to the center because it is based on pharmacogenomics. Using the col- lege's resources, he will focus on can- cer chemotherapy because it is the most toxic and least "efficacious" form of therapy. His research, he hopes, will have wide-ranging significance. "To the average person, drug tox- icity is a problem that hits the wal- let at least once a month, every time medical insurance benefits are deducted from the paycheck," Rosa- nia said. Rosania added that "the CMDT will centralize resources and instru- mentation that are currently spread over different laboratories across the entire college, and will foster communication and collaboration." Rosania is one of a number of researchers in the incipient CMDT. The renovation will take about two years to complete. In the mean- time, faculty, staff and students will have to temporarily relocate until the project is complete. "I'm very confident about it," Massie said. "They really don't have anything to say that constitutes a real challenge to what the jury found." Massie added that Johnson intends to appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court if she loses. "It is important for women in campuses," Massie said. "There really haven't been many legal cases challenging sexual harassment in higher education." Peterson said it is too early to comment on how the decision will play out and whether they would continue to appeal if they lose again. SPRING BREAK 2004! America's. Best Stu- dent Tour Operator!
