It was a few days before July's Big Ten Kickoff Lun- cheon, and Gonzales - one of two Hoosiers to make the trip - was nowhere to be found. Turns out the victim of a 2002 season-end- ing hernia injury was in Spain visiting his brother, doing just a little more special rehab before the season began. Well, after 17 phone calls, 12 from Long, Gonzales was reached and shipped directly to Chicago for the luncheon. And he had a story to tell. "I went to Madrid, Barcelona - saw the Olympic Village, and went to Pamplona for the running of the bulls, which was probably the craziest event that I've ever seen in my life," Gonzales said. The trip was also a way for Gonzales to fin- ish his recovery, physically and mentally, after missing the final eight games last season. He got to spend his time either training at the 'Y' near his brother's home, or just getting psy- ched watching the bulls run down the roads of Pamplona like offensive linemen chugging toward him during plays. But as excited as it made him, did he run? "I thought about what (Indiana coach Gerry DiNardo) would do to me, and it was out of my mind," Gonzales said. "They ran the biggest bulls (the last day), and these bulls were like two meters high at the shoulder. They just ran down the road and trampled people. It was the most bizarre experience in my life." Now Gonzales is back on the field tram- pling opponents, but he had to wait for that as well. Injured in a practice before Indiana's season opener, he returned to the playing field last week against Kentucky, recording four tackles (three solo). For DiNardo, the return of his captain is much needed for his 1-3 Hoosiers. While Indi- ana's expectations are not high this year, DiNardo is leaning on players like Gonzales to help prepare the younger classes for next year and beyond. "You look at the Big Ten in the last five years, and Illinois has been a champion and Iowa and Northwestern, so it's our turn to do it," Gonzales said. "I have no doubt that Coach DiNardo is going to do it. I just hope it's this year. People say that Indiana is a bas- ketball state, which is fine. But Florida bas- ketball is just as amazing as football now." Even if it doesn't happen this year for Gon- zales, his roommate, quarterback Matt LoVec- chio (a junior transfer from Notre Dame), may help lead the Hoosiers to respectability by next season. "The first time I really got a lot of respect for Matt was when we were watching the Wis- consin game from the stands," Gonzales said. For this week's matchup, coach Kyle O'Neill led the Wolverines and J. Brady McCollough took the helm for the Hoosiers. Play of the game - Not that Indiana had anything going for it, but the Hoosiers took a big blow when Coach McCollough decided to up and leave the game Marty Mornhinweg-style on his motorcycle after Michigan CB No. 21 returned an interception 92 yards to give Michigan a 35-0 lead, 1:46 into the second quarter. Player of the game - Though he found a way to drop the ball five times, Michi- gan WR No. 15 was a double threat with four receptions for 27 yards and nine rushing attempts for 85 yards. Because coach O'Neill forgot he was in the game at tailback, WR No. 15 got the chance to get a 47-yard score. INDIANA MICHIGAN By Naweed Sikora Daily Sports Editor 49 7 Michigan linebacker Pierre Woods walked into coach Lloyd Carr's office Sunday night following Saturday's loss at Oregon. The junior sat down and apologized to Carr for his performance in Eugene, Ore. "He came into my office and apolo- gized for not playing the way he's capa- ble of," Carr said. "He hated the way he played and promised to play his heart out from this point on. It takes an unbe- lievable person to say that." It wasn't exactly your typical player/coach meeting, but it was all that mattered at the time - moving on and trying to do anything possible to find closure after a heartbreaking loss. Woods wasn't the only Michigan player feeling apologetic after the loss. Every Michigan player, young or old, had that same empty feeling at the pit of their stomach as they made the long trip home. It's a feeling that probably won't go away until Michigan takes the field tomorrow afternoon. But in football, as in life, the show must go on - and Michigan knows it. The Wolverines spent Sunday after- noon watching game film and trying to identify correctable mistakes. The memory of Saturday's loss was still fresh in everyone's minds. "We looked at the film, and now we have to forget about it and move on,' John Navarre said. "It is a tough road but we have been in this situatior before. We have to pick ourselves ur and go on and play a very good bal club. If we don't, the season is going to go downhill, and we are not going to le that happen here." While the ultimate goal of reaching the national-championship game will be harder to realize with one loss, it's no impossible. But the Wolverines have other goals that they still have full con- trol over. Right now, the main goal is tc come off a tough loss with a strong star in the conference season against Indiana. "Now we are worried about the Big Ten championship," senior David Baas said. "That is what we can control an that is what we are going to do." But what is the team doing to leave the memory of the loss in Eugene? Brady McCollough: Four words: Playstation 2 next week. Indiana quarterback coach Jim Weber: You never know when your opportunity will come. Still I was a little surprised when Coach McCollough was fired in the middle of CAB No. 21's return to make it 35-0. You know how people in my position say it's unfortunate the way they got their opportunity? The hell with that. I was waving CB No. 21 down the sideline the whole way. I'd like to point out that I was only outscored 14-7 once I took over the helm. There might not be moral victories at Michigan, but there sure as hell are at Indiana. s far as I'm concerned, I'm undefeated as a head coach. (long pause) No, it doesn't take anything away from my kids that during one of my ong drives, Coach O'Neill was eating a bread stick ... Next question. It's a new era of Indiana football. First off, QB No. 10 will never see the light of day again. All I have to say is that if you can't earn time playing quarterback at Notre Dame, you shouldn t start anywhere ... Wait, we don't play the Irish this year do we? OK, good. Screw 'em, we're the best team in Indiana ... What? Pur- due is in Indiana, too? Shit, don't print that. Michigan coach Kyle O'Neill: Well, I coached Indiana all week in practice, so I was surprised when Coach McCollough showed up ready to coach them. Something about being sick of slow-footed QB No.16.1 don't know, questions? Yes, Indiana quarterback coach Jim Weber caught me off guard. And no, I was not eating food while he was in the red zone out of disrespect for him ... I was hungry. And no, running a goalline defense from 28 yards out in the third quarter was not my greatest move by any means. Just happy to be above .500. I only wish I could have accomplished this feat with the Hoosiers. And no, I liked "Rocky" better than that Gene Hackman movie. Ummm ... I'd rather not, but okay. Ahem. I never meant to be so bad to you; One thing I said that I would never do- A look from you, and I would fall from grace; And that would wipe the smile right from my face; Do you remember when we used to dance; And incidents arose from circumstance; One thing lead to another we were young; And we would scream together son s unsung; It was the heat of the moment; Telling me what my heart meant; the heat 01 the moment showed in your eyes. c0M 9e g6 :< 1119 S. hours: mon
