WEBBER
Continued from Page 1A
"I don't understand" and "I'm not
sure" were Webber's most frequent
responses to the questions included in
the brief,
"That was high school," Webber
said in court. "What I'm saying is I
do not recall specifically the dates

and times you asked me. I answered
every question to the best of my
ability."
Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Con-
vertino, the lead prosecutor in the case,
told the Sacramento Bee that he would
respond to Fishman's claims - in court
and in writing.
The defense's motions will be heard
after a Dec. 9 conference with Judge
Nancy Edmunds.

of more than $200,000 in attorney's fees
and costs to Johnson. Massie said
through national and state civil rights
laws, such discrimination and harass-
ment claims are regarded as "favored."
While in state cases, the fees are discre-
tionary, most judges award them to
plaintiffs, in order to encourage
such suits.

IRAQ

Blair, America's staunchest ally,
broadcast a message into Iraq saying
"The standard of living and prosperity
of the Iraqi people would be infinitely
greater were Saddam not there."
The prime minister hoped his mes-
sage would reach Saddam, the Iraqi
people "and the wider Arab world,"
his spokesman said in London. It was
broadcast yesterday by the Arabic
service of Radio Monte Carlo - the
most popular shortwave station reach-
ing Iraq.
"One of the reasons I wanted to
speak to you today is to communicate
with people directly, because what
happens in a situation like this is that

there are myths that grow up," Blair
said. "I have just dealt with one myth,
that this is about Christians versus
Muslims - it isn't - or is about the
West versus the Arab world, or it's
about oil."
Blair said Saddam's regime was
"brutal and oppressive," and if he did-
n't disarm, "the weapons will be dis-
armed by force."
On the streets of Baghdad, howev-
er, ordinary Iraqis expressed concern
the Americans were bent on a military
showdown regardless of whether their
government cooperated with the U.N.
inspectors.
"We are happy that the crisis has
been defused for the time being, but
I think the war is inevitable," said
Salah Ali, a 44-year-old bookstore

discrimination to come forward,"
Massie said last month. "Without
the attorneys' fees, you could never
have a student come forward."
Morris took the claim under
advisement yesterday. Morris' judi-
cial coordinator, Valerie Scrivener,
said it would be at least a month
before Morris would make a deci-
sion on the motion, considering her
previous motions and decisions in
the courtroom.
