Kayal was named to Soccer America's Team of the Week and Soc- cer Buzz's Elite Team of the Week, yesterday. Kayal was also named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts. - Staffreports Trammell takes helm in Detroit DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers know Alan Trammell was the popular choice to be their next manag- er. More importantly, they're also con- vinced he was the right choice. "People don't come to your games to see your manager," Tigers presi- dent and general manager Dave Dombrowski said yesterday after signing the former star shortstop to a three-year contract with a club option for a fourth season. "But if your manager makes your team per- form better and conduct itself better on and off the field, then people will show their support. "I can understand why some peo- ple will feel that this was based on Alan's popularity here. But really, we could not afford to make this deci- sion based on that because we need to right this ship." The Tigers have sunk and stunk for the most part since Trammell helped them win the 1984 World Series - Detroit's fourth - and the AL East title in 1987. Detroit has endured nine straight losing seasons and has gone through four managers since Sparky Ander- son's 17-season tenure ended in 1995. The player they called "Tram," said words such as tradition, history and respect used to be associated with the Tigers. SpopTs BRIEFS 'Pesky Twins' fall at home to Angels 6-3 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - So much for Minnesota's Metrodome dominance. Darin Erstad and Brad Fullmer homered off Rick Reed as Anaheim built a six-run lead, and the high-flying Angels beat the perky, pesky TWins 6-3 Wednesday night to head home with a split in the first two games of the AL championship series. A night after Joe Mays stymied Ana- heim's high-octane offense in the Twins' 2-1 opening victory, the Angels got to Reed from the start. Erstad, the No. 2 batter, sent Reed's sixth pitch over the fence in right-center, where it land- ed 409 feet away - nestled in a stacked-up seat used for football games. Anaheim tacked on three more runs in the second, two of them unearned because of a costly error by catcher A.J. Pierzynski - who couldn't hold on to a throw home after Reed caught a runner off first. Bonds finally shines in postseason play ST. LOUIS (AP) - Barry Bonds was smack in the middle of everything - driving in runs, scoring them and even flashing his temper in the NL championship opener. Bonds delivered yet another big hit, lining a key triple and later getting embroiled in a skirmish that nearly turned into a real slugfest as the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-6 last night. In a postseason that is rapidly becoming all his own, Bonds went 1- for-2 with three walks. The four-time MVP, known in the past for his playoff failures, hit three home runs against Atlanta in the opening round. OVE R CENTER. "This is where my heart is. I care about this place. It would make my life very satisfying to say we helped turn this thing around." With veterans that didn't perform as well as they were paid to, and prospects rushed to the major leagues, the Tigers tied Tampa Bay for the worst mark in the majors with a 55- 106 record. Dombrowski fired manager Phil Garner and general manager Randy Smith after an 0-6 start and then fired interim manager Luis Pujols the day after he lost his 100th game. "Is it going to change overnight? No," Trammell admitted. "But what I'm going to guarantee you is our pro- fessionalism and our effort." Trammell will be a manager for the first time - at any level - when the Tigers begin next season on March 31 at home against Minnesota. "I'm not worried about that because he's such a student of the game that he's managed in his head every game he's been a part of," Dombrowski said. "He's ready for this." The 44-year-old Trammell was San Diego's first base coach the past three seasons and was the Padres' outfield and baserunning coach. When Trammell's 20-season career in Detroit ended in 1996, he spent the next two seasons as an assistant in the franchise's baseball operations depart- ment and one season as the Tigers' hit- ting coach. He was fired when Garner was hired following the 1999 season. Student 60 Facials Also available: Waxing, Hair Removal, and Massage.
