4 16A - The Michigan Daily - SportsTuesday - September 3,2002 "AT HALFTIME, WE SAID NO MATTER WHAT WE'RE COMING OUT OF THIS TUNNEL SINGING 'THE VICTORS.' WE'RE GOING TO WIN." - SENIOR SAFETY CHARLES DRAKE PAVERS OF THE GAME: HUSKIES Continued from Page 13A Michigan team trying not just to take one back from the Huskies, but a team trying to regain its pride and competitive spirit after a miserable end to the 2001 cam- paign. Navarre threw for 268 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to Edwards, who had a breakout game. On the other side of the ball, the Michi- gan defense looked less like one of the nation's top units and more like the mediocre Michigan defenses that have come before. The bright spot was sopho- more cornerback Marlin Jackson, who was matched man-to-man with Washington wideout Reggie Williams - among the best at his position anywhere in the college game. Jackson was still in stride with the progress he made late last season, and kept Williams to just six receptions for 72 yards. "I've been waiting the whole year for that," Jackson said of his matchup with Williams. But the rest of the Washington passing attack functioned effortlessly, as quarter- back Cody Pickett passed for 318 yards and two touchdowns. It took a steady fourth quarter from Navarre and Brabbs' storybook field goal to keep 2002 from starting out similar to 2001. Second chances. Third chances. Fourth chances. Tenth chances. After Saturday, Michigan players, coaches and fans will give Philip Brabbs more than a few more shots at redemption as the 2002 season moves on. WEEKEND'S BEST TY SPECIAL IN IRISH DEBUT: In East Rutherford, N.J., new Notre Dame coach Ty Willingham made a debut coaches dream about as his Irish upset No. 21 Maryland 22-0. Notre Dame kicker Nick Setta hit five field goals, and Vontez Duff returned a punt 76 yards as the Irish special teams accounted for all 22 points. Notre Dame's defense held the Terps to a measley 133 yards including just 16 on the ground in a surprise defensive performance. BUFFS UPSET IN STATE CIVIL WAR: In what has become one of the most compet- itive intra-state rivalries in the coun- try, unranked Colorado State grabbed an early 13-0 lead and held off a late Buffalo rally to knock off No. 6 Colorado, 19-14, in Denver. Colorado State running back Cecil Sapp scored two first half touch- downs and quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt scrambled 23 yards for a score with 6:20 left to seal the victory. Controversial Buffs' skier/wide reciever Jeremy Bloom returned a punt 75 yards in his first collegiate game, but it wasn't nearly enough as Colorado State improved to 2-0 on the season. Michigan 31, Washington 29 WHO'S NEXT: WESTERN MICHIGAN The Broncos gave Michigan more than it bargained for last season, even though the 38-21 final may not show it. Western Michigan quarterback Jeff Welsh. who graduated, threw for 374 yards by completing 38-of-58 passes. He set school single-game records in attempts and completions against the Wolverines. Michigan's pass defense had tons of trouble with Washington's open attack, as Cody Pickett victimized the second- ary with his ability to throw from the three-step drop. The Broncos will throw many looks at Michigan, featuring both quarterbacks Chad Munson and John Drach. Western Michigan will hope for another big day passing in the Big House against a Michigan secondary that is looking to improve.
