The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 11, 2002 - 11 Lehman takes home school record 306th block assist By Josh Holman Daily Sports Writer She didn't even realize it had happened, but on Michigan's 23rd point in the second game, senior Katrina Lehman etched her name in the history books one more time. Her career block assist No. 306, which passed Linsey Ebert who played from 1995 to 1998 for the school record, came last night in Michigan's easy 3-0 win (30-13, 30-16, 30-20) over Bowling Green. Lehman entered the game with 302 block assists, good enough for third on the all-time list at Michi- gan. It wasn't until after an announcement over the public address before the third game that she realized she had finally reached the top. "I wasn't thinking about it," Lehman said. "I just wanted the win tonight. We needed it." The Wolverines got that win thanks in large part to Lehman's play. Along with the five block assists that set the new school mark, she recorded seven kills with just two attack errors and added four defensive digs for good measure. "I thought against Cincinnati and again tonight, (Lehman) has really been stepping up and taking a big load on her shoulders," coach Mark Rosen said. "That's what you expect the seniors to do." Lehman is the lone senior on the team and can expect to handle the bulk of the Wolverines' leadership responsibilities. She now also sits 34 blocks behind Julia Sturm, who played from 1987 to 1990, for the school's all-time block record. In a season that looks to have a significant amount of attention focused on her, winning is still her No. 1 priority. "I want to make it to the NCAA Tournament and be one of the top four in the Big Ten," Lehman said. The records will come. I'm not real- ly thinking about that. I want the wins." While Lehman is sure to play a large part in all of Michigan's upcoming wins, she won't be doing it alone. Junior Chantel Reedus led the team last night with 13 kills and no attack errors. She passed junior Erin Moore for the team lead in kills, bringing her total to 69 on the season. Sophomore Lisa Gamalski also tacked on 35 assists, bringing her total for the year to 247. Rosen also got a chance to look at two young players in their first game. Freshman Shaynell Neal and sophomore Candace Gay both saw limited time last night. Neal is com- ing back from a redshirt season, which shefspent recovering from rotator cuff surgery. She and Gay each recorded a kill. "My role will be to just stabilize the team and give the middles some rest," Gay said. "I look forward to some more experience." The Wolverines highly anticipate this weekend's Nebraska U.S. Bank/Arby's Classic. After Friday night's match-up with Alabama, Michigan will have to contend with both No. 22 Santa Clara and No. 4 Nebraska Saturday. "We're going with the attitude that we need to win three matches," Rosen said. "Even though the teams are highly ranked, those are the type of teams we need to beat to get to where we want to go." BRACKEN Continued from Page 10 Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said that Bracken's showing "was the best that he has played. He has a different style than Chris (Perry) or David (Underwood) and if he keeps coming, it will be a big load off of Chris' shoul- ders." That style Carr referred to reminds Biakabatuka, known for his shiftyness and ability to cut on a dime. There is no doubt that Carr has big plans for incorporating Bracken's skills into the offense. "I think he's a guy that has what I call great in-line quickness,' Can said. "He can make the shallow cuts, and the real sharp cut that a lot of people can't make. He's good in the open field, and he has good hands. He's a guy that plays with a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm, and I'm looking for- ward to seeing how he comes." Bracken is coming along just fine. He's admittedly stronger than before the injury, and said before fall practice started that it "felt really well" when he cut and planted his leg.
