4 14A - The Michigan Daily - SportsTuesday - September 3, 2002 3PORTs BRIEFS A TE dFTanHEEE ATH LE TE OF T HE W EEK Oakland ties American League record with win OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Miguel Tejada and the Oakland Athletics simply refuse to lose - even when the degree of difficulty gets higher and higher. Tejada got his second straight game- ending hit as the A's matched the longest winning streak in AL history with their 19th straight victory yesterday, beating the Kansas City Royals 7-6. David Justice homered and drove in four runs as Oakland overcame a 5-0 deficit and a terrible start by ace Barry Zito to equal the 19 straight wins recorded by the 1906 White Sox and matched by the 1947 Yankees. With their second straight victory in their final at-bat, the A's recorded the fifth-longest streak in major league his- tory and the third longest since 1900. With the bases loaded and the score tied at six in the ninth, Tejada drove a sharp one-out single through five drawn-in infielders. The hit sparked a replay of the raucous Coliseum celebra- tion on Sunday, when Tejada's dramatic three-run homer beat Minnesota. For the third straight day, the A's streak seemed to be in serious jeopardy. In the fifth inning, Oakland trailed 5-0 and hadn't managed a hit against Kansas City starter Runelvys Hernandez, while Zito had been battered by the Royals' light-hitting lineup. But Oakland rallied with Justice's two-run homer in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth, capped by Jus- tice's two-run single that put Oakland up 6-5. Kansas City tied it in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth, but Tejada turned Neifi Perez's grounder into an inning-ending double play. Strahan to stay sack- happy for the Giants EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Defensive player of the year Michael Strahan agreed to a seven-year, $46 mil- lion deal yesterday that will allow the NFL's single-season sack holder to end his career with the New York Giants. The deal came three days before the Giants' season opener against the San Francisco 49ers and just six months after an angry Strahan declared that this would be his final season with the team after a proposed $56 million deal fell apart. "I am very happy I will be in New York and that I am going to stay here," Strahan said at a hastily called news conference. "I feel great to know this is where I started my career and this is where I will finish my career." The 30-year-old Strahan will receive a $6.4 million signing bonus. A total of $20.9 million of the contract will be guaranteed over the next three seasons, including $5.5 million in salary this year. The defensive end will earn $32 million over the next four years, the same amount the 10-year veteran earned under a four-year contract he signed in 1999. The new deal will free $1.25 million in salary cap space for the Giants this year. More importantly, it won't tie up cap space in the future because the guaranteed money can be prorated over the life of the contract. Strahan will only count $4.2 million against the salary cap next year. He will count $10.9 million against the cap this year. "I have a deal that will make me be a New York Giant for as long as that deal says I should be a New York Giant," Strahan said. 4 Who: Abby Crumpton Hometown: Rochester Hills Position: Forward Sport: Women's soccer Year: Senior Why: Yesterday, at the 61-minute mark, Crumpton scored the game-win- ning goal against Brigham Young. "We lost a family member," Gophers coach Glen Mason said Sunday at a news con- ference to announce the death of Brandon Hall, a 19-year-old red-k shirt freshman. Hall was shot about eight blocks from the Metrodome dur- ing a dispute between a group of teammates and three other men about 2 a.m., police said. The Hall players had accused the men of assaulting Gophers player Damian Haye and ripping a gold chain from his neck. As the players approached, the three men began walking away and went into a van, police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington said. One of them got out of the van and began walking toward the players. "At that point, someone in the group said, 'He's got a gun!' and they scattered," Barrington said. "But the suspect was still able to take a shot." Hall was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center. "To the best of my knowledge, Brandon Hall was an innocent victim," Mason said. A handgun was recovered and the three men were arrested but have not been charged. Barring- ton said charges could come today. The alleged gunman is a 28-year-old suspected gang member from Minneapolis, who has more than 80 police contacts as a suspect, witness or victim in crimes, the Star Tribune reported. Hall, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive lineman from Detroit, made one tackle in the Golden Gophers' 42-0 opening victory over Southwest Texas State on Saturday night. "He was a wonderful person," Hall's aunt, Cyn- thia Hall, told WJBK-TV in Detroit. "He was very helpful to his mother. They were very close." Mason met with players and some of Hall's friends early Sunday. He said the team canceled its Sunday practice and was not sure when the Gophers would resume workouts for their game at Louisiana-Lafayette. "They're kids and they're looking for help," Mason said. "And we intend to give them all the help we can in dealing with this loss." Athletic director Joel Maturi said the school would provide counselors for the team. "These are all things that none of us have been taught to deal with," he said. At Finney High School in Detroit, Hall's alma matter, football coach Tony Elliot wasn't sure how he would break the news to his players, many of whom played with Hall. Elliot never coached Hall but said he would visit the team on trips home from Minnesota and work with the players. "He cared about the program and was willing to volunteer and help out," Elliott told The Detroit Free Press. "Before I knew it, he was there during his spring break, working techniques with my football class." Tholl rewarded with promotion after 10 years Since joining Michigan's softball family in 1988 as a player, Bonnie Tholl has been nothing but successful for the Wolverines. Last Wednesday that success was rewarded with a promotion from assistant coach - a: position Tholl has Tho01 had for the past 10 years - to associate head coach for this 2002-03 season. Tholl, along with head coach Carol Hutchins and assistant coach Jennifer Brundage have led Michigan to two- straight Women's College World Series appearances The new associate head coach played for the Wolverines from 1988-1991 as a shortstop. She became the first Big Ten player to be named to the All-Big Ten team in each of her four years and was named to the All-Decade team of the 1980s.
