JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli heli- copters attacked a suspected bomb fac- tory in the Gaza Strip early today, hours after Palestinian fighters blew up an Israeli tank, killed two soldiers and tried to plant a huge car bomb in Israel. The Palestinians launched their assaults yesterday despite heightened Israeli security before the Jewish New Year. The militants called the attacks retaliation for killings of civilians. The attacks broke a monthlong lull in Palestinian strikes. Israel hit back early today with a helicopter missile strike at a metal workshop in Khan Younis, a city in central Gaza, witnesses said. Hospital officials said there were no casualties. The Israeli military said the target was a weapons factory. Witnesses said the buidling was in flames. In Tel Aviv, Marwan Barghouti, a key leader of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, went on trial on charges of murder, attempted murder and terror- ism and became the highest-ranking Palestinian official to face an Israeli civil court. Israelis were shaken by the magni- tude of the attempted car bomb attack that was prevented early yesterday when volunteers helping police spotted two cars racing along a dirt road near the West Bank just inside Israel. After a brief pursuit the drivers abandoned the vehicles and escaped, and police found a bomb with 1,300 pounds of explosives in one of them, a small truck. A huge cloud of orange flames and smoke filled the sky as a bomb squad blew up the truck in an open field. A bomb that size - far larger than any that has exploded in Israel during the current two-year conflict - could have brought down a large building or devas- tated a shopping center, officials said. - Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said that had the bomb been planted in a nearby Israeli city, it "would have cost such loss of life that it would have changed almost the entire political situation in one moment." The foiled attack came amid a tremendous security effort as nervous Israelis prepared for the two-day New Year holiday that begins tonight. Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Olivier Rafowicz said travel restric- tions in the West Bank would be tight- ened even more over the holiday. The attack on the tank in Gaza was a two-stage operation that began with a nighttime rocket assault, drawing Israeli forces into the area, the military said. Israeli forces closed it off, and in the morning, forces, including a tank, went to search the area, said the unit commander, Maj. Assaf Liberti. The tank ran over and detonated a huge bomb, blowing the turret off, killing the driver instantly and trapping two soldiers under the three-ton turret. It took five hours to extricate the two from the burning tank. Liberti said the bomb weighed more than 220 pounds. About the same time, a Palestinian gunman approached a road used by Israeli soldiers in the northern part of the Gaza Strip and opened fire on a jeep, killing an officer and wounding another soldier. The military said Israeli forces chased the gunman and shot him dead. An umbrella group representing sev- eral Palestinian factions claimed responsibility. "This operation came to prove that Palestinian fighters are capa- ble of reaching everywhere and retaliat- ing ... for Israeli crimes," a caller told The Associated Press, reading from a statement. The umbrella group is domi- nated by Arafat's Fatah faction. In another development, Israeli police on Thursday posted destruction notices on the houses of four Jerusalem Arabs suspected of planning or carrying out attacks that killed 36 bystanders, including the July 31 bombing of a university cafeteria in Jerusalem. Police spokeswoman Sigal Toledo said the four have 48 hours to appeal to the Supreme Court to stop the destruction of their houses. Also yesterday, Palestinian militants killed two Palestinians they suspected of collaborating with Israeli intelli- gence. The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, linked to Fatah, took responsibility. Reacting to the attacks in Gaza Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told a meeting of his Labor Party Israel would not return occupied areas of, the Gaza Strip to Palestinian Authority con- trol, as agreed last month, his spokesman said. Under the 1990s interim accords, Israel handed about two-thirds of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority, but over almost two years of fighting, it retook some of that area. !!WILL TRADE 4 MSU VS. Information/Reservations: 1-800-648-4849 or www.ststravel.com WASHINGTON (AP) - A lawyer for Steven Hatfill, called a "person of interest" in the anthrax attacks, demanded yesterday that Attorney General John Ashcroft find the fired researcher a new job. Attorney Victor Glasberg wrote in the letter that Hatfill was fired from his job as a researcher and probably won't be able find employment because of the Justice Department's "inappropriate actions" in naming him a person of interest. "With all due respect, it is proper for you to take the lead in setting this right immediately," Glasberg wrote. The letter also asked why Hatfill has been targeted by the Justice Depart- ment and FBI. The department had no immedi- ate comment. Louisiana State University fired Hatfill on Wednesday from his job with the university's National Cen- ter for Biomedical Research and Training after an e-mail from the Justice Department surfaced, order- ing the university to stop him from working on federally funded proj- ects. LSU spokesman Gene Sands said Hatfill's firing was not related to the e-mail. In addition to the letter, Glasberg has filed a complaint with the depart- ment's Office of Professional Respon- sibility, saying the Justice Department leaked information to the media and allowed FBI agents to harass Hatfill's girlfriend. He also complained that the department intentionally blacklisted Hatfill. Glasberg also asked the agency to define what a "person of interest" is, saying the intention in using the phrase appears to be to defame his client. "This functional equivalent of black- listing is reprehensible and sanction- able," Glasberg wrote. Also in the complaint, Glasberg quoted Hatfill's girlfriend, who was not identified, as saying FBI agents ran- sacked her apartment and told her Hat- fill was a murder suspect. University officials confirmed yes- terday that they also fired Stephen Guillot, director of the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training and the Academy for Counter-Terrorist Education. Sands declined to discuss why Guillot was fired, saying it was a personnel matter. Guillot was not at home and could not immediately be reached for comment. Law enforcement officials have said Hatfill, 48, is not a suspect in the deaths of five people killed by anthrax- tainted letters. They also have said no evidence links him to the letters. Hatfill worked until 1999 for Fort Detrick's Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Maryland _ the primary custodian of the virulent Ames strain of anthrax found in the anthrax letters. Hatfill, who recently moved to Baton Rouge, La., taught classes for the LSU center on the East Coast before getting the $150,000-a-year associate director's job on July 1.
