GREEKS
Continued from Page ±
"We've been working on this for
months and have endeavored to do
our homework," Binder said. At this
stage of planning, the recommenda-
tions are preliminary and will con-
tinue to be evaluated. In October
2003, the committee hopes to pres-
ent its finalized long-term plan for
the Greek community, which
encompasses all the proposals.
Each specific proposal will have a
time frame of less than 10 years for
implementation.
Current Greek leaders are excited
about the creation of a plan for the

community that will outlast their
time in office. LSA senior Monica
Rose, former Panhellenic Council
president, said the biggest goal of
the planning is greater unification
both within the Greek community
and with the University.
The planning process benefits
from the opinions and ideas of
alumni, University staff members
and parents who serve on the com-
mittee.
LSA junior Liz Franke, current
Panhellenic Council president, said
their input is important and their
perspective is helpful.
"We rely on alumni support heav-
ily - we value what they think of

us," she said.
Franke added that the meetings
are not in response to a specific
series of problems or crises within
the Greek community.
"I don't think there are any blasting
problems. We have very, very high
standards for ourselves (but) there's
always room to raise the bar."
Interfraternity Council President
and Business School junior Bran-
den Muhl echoed this sentiment.
"This is a process of self-better-
ment," Muhl said. "I'm pleased
with the direction of this board and
the quality of our discussions.
These are great long-term recom-
mendations."

FIRE CHIEF
Continued from Page 1
organized into a two-round process
- the second round began after a
candidate who was previously
selected, Rick Tye, declined the
position. Members of the fire chief
search committee consisted of sev-
eral city administrators and offi-
cials, including city council
members.
Police Chief Daniel Oates is cur-
rently serving as the interim fire
chief.
"(Gorman) interviewed for the
position and was a candidate that
we considered highly," said search

committee member Ron Olson,
associate administrator and superin-
tendent of the Department of Parks
and Recreation. "He has vast expe-
rience working as a fire chief"
Olson said the AAFD is in the
process of making efficiency and
budget changes, adding that a new
fire chief will be a welcome addition
to the department's administration.
"We're looking forward to having
Mr. Gorman join the fire department,"
Olson said.
Mayor John Hieftje could not be
reached for comment due to the
death of his infant daughter, who
passed away in Chicago Sunday
night.

SARS
Continued from Page 1
be a very serious disaster."
As of yesterday, the World Health
Organization reported 2,671 cases or
SARS with 103 deaths from 17 coun-
tries. This is a increase of 70 cases and
five deaths compared to Monday. One
death was in Canada, making the coun-
try's total count 10 deaths out of a
cumulative 91 cases.
With Canada located so closely to
Michigan, Winfield was particularly
concerned with students going there.
He said that while Toronto is a popular
place to travel, people should not travel
there until it is deemed safe again.
